Kenny Omega says he was at peace with taking a step back and having a non-wrestling role in AEW.
Ahead of his AEW World Championship match against MJF at AEW Dynasty on April 12, Kenny Omega sat down for an interview with CBC News Manitoba. During the conversation, he opened up about competing for the title in his home country, Canada, and also spoke about his recovery from diverticulitis, which almost derailed his career.
Kenny Omega noted that he was at peace with accepting a non-wrestling role in AEW if his recovery hadn’t gone well.
“Yeah, I think that’s great. I think a big part of it, too, which I think helped me a lot in this journey, was that I was at peace with being able to take a huge step back if I needed to,” Kenny Omega began. “If I needed to have a complete non-physical role within the company, and just be an office guy in the back, that’s never seen but is still contributing. I was happy to just be involved with this project, that is AEW, with this company, with its wonderful fans, its athletes.
“I think having that sense of calmness and being able to accept the current situation actually helped me put forward more of an effort in the pursuit of getting back what I lost,” Kenny Omega said. “Because I feel like if I was in a panic mode, I would’ve run around like a chicken with its head cut off, not knowing whether to go left, whether to go right, should I try something new, or should I keep really doubling down on what I’m currently doing?
Kenny Omega thanks current-day medical science for his recovery
Speaking further, Kenny Omega credited the latest advancements in medical science for providing him a variety of options for conditions like inflammation and boosting his energy, something he didn’t have in his early years.
“I think just being honest with yourself, in this case, or honestly, with myself in this case, and just being very open-minded to not only the fact that things may work if I try something new, but if they don’t work, to be able to accept that. ‘Okay, I’ve tried everything that I could. I can’t say that I didn’t try. Let’s see what’s next.’
“But being able to have this smorgasbord of options for me to have available, especially with current-day medical science, supplementation, and all that, there are all these things I never had access to years and years ago, which are absolutely for sure helping me in today’s world with things like inflammation, energy. I probably would’ve been in a world of hurt without that sort of help,” Kenny Omega said.
“So I’ve had a lot of wonderful people all around me, around the team of people that I work with in AEW, that have always been there to help, and to always pursue whatever the next best medical or supplementation scientific advancement might be out there to help my condition,” Kenny Omega said.
