AEW‘s Will Ospreay hopes to compete in NJPW’s G1 Climax tournament once again.
After returning to in-ring competition in AEW last month, Will Ospreay made his first appearance in NJPW in over two years at the Sakura Genesis event in Tokyo on April 4. He teamed up with his United Empire partners, Henare and Great-O-Khan, to defeat El Desperado, Taichi, and Yuya Uemura in a six-man tag team match.
Will Ospreay spoke to Tokyo Sports after the event and confirmed that he couldn’t appear at the Osaka-jo Hall on June 14 for the NJPW Dominion event because he’s getting married to AEW’s Alex Windsor the next day. However, he hopes to participate in many matches in Japan this year, and wants to win the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship, teaming up wth Henare and Great-O-Khan.
“I can’t appear at Osaka-jo Hall (June 14) because my wedding (to AEW’s Alex Windsor) is the day after the event, but I want to participate in as many big New Japan matches as possible this year. AEW is the best environment, but I have a special feeling for Japan, and I also want to spend more time with the members of United Empire (UE),” Will Ospreay said.
Will Ospreay hopes to compete in the G1 Climax tournament again
Speaking further, Will Ospreay noted that it’s hard to ask Tony Khan for six weeks off to compete in this year’s G1 Climax, which will run from July 11 to August 16, 2026. However, he hopes to enter the tournament at some point down the line. Ospreay also wants to compete for the newly revived “V4” IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt.
“It’s hard to ask Tony this year if I can take about six weeks off, but I’ve talked to my wife about it, and I do want to participate in the G1 Climax again someday. I’ve never won it, so I want to try again. Also, the fourth-generation IWGP Heavyweight belt, which was revived this year, has been worn by Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega, and others, and I’ve always admired them. So I also want that belt,” Will Ospreay said.
Will Ospreay will be in action this Sunday at AEW Dynasty, where he takes on Jon Moxley for the Continental Championship.
