Sami Zayn recently addressed the growing talk around his character direction and his turn heel in WWE.
Over the past few weeks, fans have reacted strongly to his recent actions. The reaction started becoming louder after Zayn lost his title to Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42. One moment that gained attention came when he attacked the Gingerbread Man.
Despite that reaction, Zayn says he does not believe he has completely turned heel.
Sami Zayn comments on WWE heel turn speculation amid mixed reactions
Speaking in an interview with the Toronto Sun, Zayn discussed the fan response and his current character direction. He immediately disagreed with the idea that he had fully turned heel. “Well, first I’ll disagree with your statement that I’ve fully turned heel here. I don’t think I have.”
Zayn explained that he wanted to try something different with his character. “So, I had this idea for a slight kind of character shift that would be a little outside the box, that would kind of split the audience a little bit.” He also admitted that the story has not unfolded exactly how he originally imagined. “Sometimes things just don’t work out exactly how you envision it.”
“I think we sometimes overthink it, like what makes someone good, what makes someone bad.” He added that wrestlers often pull from real personality traits and emotions. “What do you value in people, and what qualities and characteristics do you not like in people? Then you kind of embody those things.”
Zayn also addressed the strange fan reactions he has been getting recently. “I’m getting booed, but then I’ll high-five fans on the way to the ring and when I’m leaving the ring, and I’m seeing cheers… I got booed so heavily, but then during the commercial break, when I was standing in the ring looking around, all these fans were waving and throwing up little hearts.”
He continued, “And I’m like, ‘What is going on here?’ So, I think this kind of polarizing thing and talking about my fans, like the ride-or-die fans that haven’t turned their back on me or whatever, that kind of stuff, I just think there’s something fun there. And I like giving fans a choice.”
“You can be on either side of the fence a little bit, but again, we’ll kind of see because everything is kind of organically unfolding. So we’ll see where things land. But I don’t think I’ve fully committed or fully embraced the dark side, as you would maybe put it.”
