Danhausen continued his bizarre search for a WWE Backlash tag team partner during the May 8 episode of SmackDown, and the latest chapter in the storyline only added more chaos to an already cursed situation.
With his match against The Miz and Kit Wilson scheduled for Backlash on May 9, Danhausen spent the show effectively holding open auditions backstage.
The segment leaned heavily into Danhausen’s eccentric personality as he attempted to convince anyone — retired legends included — to stand beside him at the premium live event.
While WWE still has not revealed who the mystery partner will be, speculation surrounding the role continues to mount faster than one of Danhausen’s random escape sprints through backstage.
Danhausen continues search for WWE Backlash mystery partner
During the backstage segment, The Miz and Kit Wilson mocked Danhausen for failing to secure a partner. Miz claimed a match wouldn’t even transpire because nobody wanted to team with him, while Wilson called Danhausen “toxic.”
Danhausen fired back by insisting he still had options, including “Papa Shango” and “Bob the Gatorade Guy.” The segment then took another strange turn when Wilson held up a mirror and joked that the only person toxic enough to team with Danhausen was Danhausen himself.
Rather than feeling insulted, Danhausen reportedly reacted with excitement before “disappearing” by running off-screen and immediately sprinting back across the set in typical fashion. Sometimes in WWE, the best no-sell is simply outrunning the punchline.
The ongoing mystery has become one of Backlash’s more talked-about undercard angles. In recent weeks, Danhausen has publicly attempted to recruit retired legends, including Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, by offering them “400 human dollars” to return.
Fan speculation has also intensified around the possibility of “Cola Man Punk” — a clear nod to CM Punk — appearing as the mystery partner. Punk and Danhausen are longtime friends outside WWE, and reports suggest many fans believe the pairing would fit naturally into the comedy-heavy feud.
The rivalry itself began after The Miz pretended to mentor Danhausen before eventually betraying him alongside Wilson in a brutal attack on SmackDown.
Now, with Backlash only hours away, the biggest mystery may not be whether Danhausen can win — but whether anyone is actually willing to stand in his corner.
