Sami Zayn’s recent character shift on WWE television may have looked like the beginning of a traditional heel turn. Nevertheless, a new backstage report suggests the situation was far more complicated behind the scenes.
According to the latest details, the former US Champion actively pushed back against WWE creative plans that would have turned him into a straightforward villain on SmackDown.
Speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro claimed that Zayn argued internally for a more layered direction after fans started turning against him during his United States Championship run.
Instead of fully embracing a heel role, Zayn reportedly wanted the story to reflect an evolving and complicated relationship with the audience.
“He didn’t really want to turn heel,” the report stated. “He told them, ‘I don’t think I’m a bad guy. I feel like my relationship with the fans is evolving.’”
That backstage explanation lines up closely with comments Zayn recently made to the Toronto Sun, where he denied fully turning heel despite fan reactions becoming increasingly hostile.
“I think I’m trying to play this one a little different,” Zayn said.
Sami Zayn wanted a more nuanced WWE character shift
The shift in crowd reactions began after Zayn defeated Carmelo Hayes for the United States Championship during an open challenge that Hayes had inherited from former champion Ilja Dragunov.
A botched interference attempt involving Trick Williams helped spark tension between Zayn and the audience before eventually leading into a WrestleMania 42 feud between the two stars.
Williams later defeated Zayn for the championship at WrestleMania before retaining the title in their Backlash rematch alongside rapper Lil Yachty.
The storyline took an even stranger turn on SmackDown when Zayn compared himself to Bob Dylan “going electric” before attacking the Gingerbread Man mascot associated with Williams.
Zayn kicked the mascot below the belt, beat it down, and tore off one of its arms in a segment that quickly became one of WWE’s most talked-about moments. Safe to say the Gingerbread Man definitely didn’t get the babyface comeback spot.
According to the report, Zayn’s current presentation was always meant to divide audience reactions rather than create a clean-cut heel persona. For now, WWE appears committed to letting that gray-area character continue developing on SmackDown.
