Dawn Marie Addresses Backlash To WWE Affair Storyline With Torrie Wilson’s Father

Dawn Marie has reflected on the controversial WWE storyline involving Torrie Wilson and her real-life father, Al Wilson.

Following her run in ECW, Dawn Marie joined WWE SmackDown, where she became part of a highly controversial angle with Torrie Wilson. The storyline saw Marie begin a relationship with Torrie’s real father, Al Wilson, which later led to an on-screen marriage.

The pair got married on SmackDown in their underwear before his character was written off after a storyline heart attack following their honeymoon. The angle culminated in a “stepmother vs. stepdaughter” match at Royal Rumble 2003, where Dawn Marie lost to Torrie Wilson.

Speaking to Scott Johnson on Going Ringside, Dawn Marie revealed that the idea of using Torrie Wilson’s real father in the storyline was actually pitched within WWE, with Torrie agreeing to it so she could spend more time with her father while traveling on the road.

“They came up with an angle. They wanted me to seduce her father. They used her real father. That was her real dad. They asked her, ‘Do you want to use your real dad or do you want us to hire someone?’ She’s like, ‘No, you know, use my real dad. It’ll give me an opportunity to spend some time with him cuz you know when you’re on the road you don’t see your family ever.’ And it just grew a life of its own.”

She also admitted the situation was uncomfortable at times while filming.

“It was weird when I had to make out with her father and her all on the same night.”

When asked if fans still bring up the storyline today, she said it is still frequently discussed, despite its negative reception.

“Oh, all the time. Although, you know, it’s so funny because a lot of people say, ‘Oh my god, that was the worst angle ever.’ But I’m like, ‘How? How? That’s everybody remembers it. So, how is it horrible?’ They’re still asking you about it decades later.

“So, if it was horrible, then no one would remember, right? So, I loved it. It was a great time.”
