The wrestling world is mourning the loss of longtime Memphis wrestling figure Phil Hickerson, who has passed away at the age of 79.
Hickerson’s death on May 20, 2026, was confirmed by PWInsider, with tributes quickly pouring in from across the wrestling industry for one of territorial wrestling’s respected veterans.
Known for his rugged in-ring style and larger-than-life presence throughout the Tennessee territory days, Hickerson spent decades building a legacy that stretched far beyond Memphis rings and studio wrestling broadcasts.
Phil Hickerson leaves lasting legacy in Memphis Wrestling
Hickerson became a standout name in promotions such as NWA Mid-America and the Continental Wrestling Association during wrestling’s territorial era.
Fans also remembered him for memorable personas including “PY Chu-Hi” and “Mr. Nashville,” while his team with Dennis Condrey as the Bicentennial Kings became a notable part of Memphis wrestling history.
His career began in 1974 before injuries forced him away from the ring in 1980. Hickerson later returned to action in 1984 and continued wrestling through 1991 before officially working his final matches for the USWA in 1995. That same year, he was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Outside the ring, Hickerson also played a role in helping younger talent during the territory era, including future stars like Sting and Ultimate Warrior during the early stages of their careers.
The Cauliflower Alley Club released a statement honoring Hickerson’s passing, writing, “The wrestling world has lost one of its true tough men. Today we say goodbye to Phil Hickerson.”
Following his retirement from wrestling, Hickerson spent many years working as a radio DJ for WYN 106.9 in Jackson, Tennessee, becoming a familiar voice in the local community long after his in-ring days ended.
His passing marks another significant loss from wrestling’s territorial generation — a group of performers who helped shape the foundation of the business for future generations.
