Former WWE star Carlito recently bucked back against claims that he ripped off Razor Ramon for his character.
Speaking during a recent appearance on Wrestling With Heart, Carlito was asked about people considering some of his vignettes ripping off Razor Ramon. The WWE legend said he never realized how similar some of them were until he watched Ramon’s WWE Hall of Fame introduction, which featured some classic vignettes.
“When I realised, I was watching Razor Ramon get inducted into the Hall of Fame, I think it was the same one as my dad. They’re showing the package and I’m like ‘ah, I see’,” said Carlito (via WrestleTalk). People used to say ‘he’s a Razor Ramon ripoff’ and I didn’t really get it, then I looked at that and was like ‘ah ok, now I see it’. It’s almost the exact same thing.
“(Ramon spitting apples) was the Razor Ramon thing. In one of them, he grabbed—I forget what he grabbed, and he spat it at somebody. In my version, I was at a food stand, but I grabbed an apple, and the guy who owned the food stand asked me to pay, and then I spat the apple on him instead of paying him.”
According to Carlito, Vince McMahon loved the vignettes he saw, and told him to keep doing it. The rest is history, as Carlito has gone on to have one of the most memorable careers in the ring, especially amongst Ruthless Aggression Era stars.
“Vince loved it and said, ‘I want you to keep doing that,’ and that’s kind of how it came about. Who knew. It became my signature bit, people seem to love it.”
