Vince McMahon Told Former WWE Star His Ego Would Get Over Ring Gear He Hated

MVP’s WWE career eventually became known for confidence, charisma, and eye-catching gear. Nevertheless, his first look in the company almost became memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Years after his debut, the former United States Champion has revealed how Vince McMahon reacted when he complained about an outfit he never wanted to adorn.

Speaking on Marking Out with MVP & Dwayne Swayze, MVP recalled his frustration with the ring gear prepared for his WWE debut.

What he expected and what arrived couldn’t have been further apart, setting the stage for an unforgettable conversation with McMahon.

MVP recalls Vince McMahon’s response to WWE debut gear concerns

According to MVP, he envisioned a sleek, high-performance athletic look similar to modern compression gear. Instead, the outfit delivered to him was a bright blue bodysuit covered in rhinestones.

The gear immediately drew criticism. JBL, who was on commentary for MVP’s televised in-ring debut at No Mercy 2006, famously joked that he looked like a “Bud Light can.” During the match, JBL and Michael Cole also mocked the flashy attire. Moreover, fans responded with chants comparing him to a Power Ranger.

Before making his debut, MVP approached McMahon hoping the WWE Chairman would agree that the outfit missed the mark.

“I went to Vince and said, ‘Vince, this is not what we talked about,'” MVP recalled. He explained that he wanted to look like a serious athlete, adding, “I don’t feel like a high-performance athlete.”

McMahon, however, saw things differently. According to MVP, his response was simple: “Your ego can get this over.”

As it turned out, McMahon believed the over-the-top presentation fit MVP’s arrogant, highly paid athlete character. While the outfit became the butt of a few jokes, it also became part of the early story of his WWE run.

Eventually, MVP found a creative way to move on from the gear. During preparations for an Inferno Match involving Kane, he handed the outfit over for a fire stunt and encouraged the crew to “burn that sh*t.” The suit was destroyed, allowing him to transition into the custom gear designs that later became a signature part of his presentation.
