Chad Gable believes one of WWE’s most unique recent storylines has more chapters than fans may have realized.
After reaching a defining moment in his rivalry with El Grande Americano, the RAW star says the road to that match had so many layers that it deserves to be documented in full.
Speaking with Brady Jones on The Hot Tag, Gable reflected on the journey behind the critically acclaimed Mask vs. Mask showdown. He explained why its story stretched far beyond what viewers saw on television.
Chad Gable says El Grande Americano story had “so many facets”
Recalling the rivalry, Gable explained that the storyline evolved through countless twists before concluding at AAA’s Noche de Los Grandes.
“There are so many facets to what got us to that final point that I think someday we’re going to have to do like a documentary or something because there’s so many little routes that this had to take and deviations from what had happened,” Gable said.
The El Grande Americano story began in early 2025 as a lighthearted character following Gable’s search for the secrets of lucha libre. What started as a comedic concept gradually developed into one of the most talked-about cross-promotional stories between WWE and AAA.
The angle took another turn after Gable suffered a legitimate shoulder injury in 2025. Rather than shelving the character, WWE had Ludwig Kaiser continue under the El Grande Americano mask. This allowed the persona to evolve in a different direction before Gable eventually returned as “The Original” El Grande Americano. That set the stage for a months-long rivalry that culminated in the Mask vs. Mask match.
Gable has previously stated that the acclaimed bout proved he belongs in the WWE Championship conversation. Nevertheless, he also believes the journey was just as important as the destination. Like any great long-term storyline, the payoff was built overnight — it was stitched together one chapter at a time.
Although the rivalry has concluded, Gable’s comments suggest he views it as a career-defining story whose full behind-the-scenes journey has yet to come to light.
