Former WWE Champion AJ Styles sees a bigger story behind Sami Zayn’s nine-day title reign.
Styles recently addressed Sami Zayn dropping the Undisputed WWE Championship to CM Punk on a recent episode of his Phenomenally Retro Podcast. He said he believes Zayn’s short title reign might lead to a character change for him and a three-way match for the title against Punk and Cody Rhodes. Accordingly, he urged people to remain patient and let the story unfold.
“Let’s see where this story goes before we start getting mad about everything that’s going on. By the way, CM Punk looks like a million bucks right now. But you know there is a story that’s happening. So before we get our panties in a wad, and be as negative as we get, let’s see what happens. Because this may be a transition in where Sami is a totally different character, and that might be what we need, and it might be another match to do,” Styles began.
He then referred to Punk’s segment with Rhodes on RAW after WWE WrestleMania 42, saying, “What is the next match that we’re looking forward to with CM Punk? Is it him and Cody? I remember going back months ago, ‘Hey, if you want, just ask.’ This match happens again. I’m just throwing this out there. We’re 90% wrong on most of the stuff that we’re talking about.”
Styles continued, “Cody and freaking Punk, Sami comes out, helluva kicks both of them, match is thrown out, there’s no winner, Sami’s pissed off, and then it leads to a three-way. There’s things that can happen. So, let’s see where it goes, is all I’m saying. Before we start judging and being mad, even though I didn’t want a transitional champion, let’s see where it goes.”
Styles says Sami Zayn not getting a lengthy reign is odd
Speaking further, AJ Styles reacted to the co-host pitching Kevin Owens’ return to help Sami Zayn reclaim the Undisputed WWE Championship, saying the idea is the true definition of flip-flopping. He also pointed out that Zayn losing his championship quickly is odd in an era defined by Roman Reigns’ and Cody Rhodes’ long title reigns. However, he believes the creative team might have something big planned for the storyline.
“That is the true definition of flip-flopping. Is that what we want? Or could that happen? Yeah! And would it be cool? Yes, because we don’t do it. How long was Cody champion? Then how long did Roman get? Champions normally hold on to their titles for a very long time. The fact that Sami didn’t is odd and unexpected,” Styles said.
He continued, “Again, is that a bad thing that he lost it so quickly, but then comes back? I don’t know, man. We’re just going to have to watch the show. These guys are smarter than I am when it comes to writing. So, let’s just see what it is.”
