WWE Champion CM Punk recently shared a wild story from 2011. It happened during one of wrestling’s biggest years for him.
Punk had just become one of WWE’s biggest stars. His Pipebomb promo changed everything for his career. Around that time, he made a promise to his sister to run a marathon in Chicago with her.
WWE star CM Punk explains how he forgot about the marathon
Speaking on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story podcast, Punk reflected on the family that raised him after he left home at 15. He explained that the family took him in, and his sister’s father became the father figure in his life.
He recalled why he agreed to run. His sister wanted to honor their late father. She asked Punk to run the Chicago Marathon together. “She was like, ‘I’m gonna run the Chicago Marathon for Dad.’ She’s like, ‘You want to do it with me?'” Punk agreed because he thought he was leaving WWE soon. “I was like, ‘Oh yeah, absolutely.'”
Things changed after Punk signed a new WWE deal. He admitted he completely forgot about the marathon afterwards. “Famously, what happens? I re-sign. Totally forget about the, ‘Yeah, I’ll do the marathon with you.'”
Punk expected to have that weekend completely free. Instead, WWE sent him to Australia for appearances. “I went, ‘Huh? Really?’… ‘Yeah, we’re gonna send you to Australia.'” After returning home, his sister was already waiting there.
She reminded him the marathon was the next morning. “She was like, ‘I knew you’d forget. The marathon’s tomorrow.'” Despite not training, Punk decided to go through with it anyway. He spent the night buying bagels, peanut butter, and snacks before the race.
“I sat on my couch. I couldn’t sleep because I was wired from—the trip, yeah. Yeah. Don’t know what time zone you’re on anyway. Ate peanut butter and bagels. All night. And then she wakes up, she walks out of the room, and she looks at me and she just goes, ‘You’re not running the marathon.’ And I was like, ‘Yes, I am.'”
The story did not end with the marathon either. Stephanie McMahon’s team pointed out another crazy detail afterwards. Punk wrestled twice on WWE RAW the following night. He first faced Alberto Del Rio in singles action. Later, he teamed with Del Rio the same night. It made the whole story even more unbelievable.
