AEW Dynamite is coming to you live just days away from AEW Redemption.
We Hear From Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega & Jon Moxley
Will Ospreay addresses the Nashville crowd and says they are in for a treat because they have “The Billy Goat,” Kenny Omega, and Jon Moxley all on the same team. Ospreay points out that every time he and Omega have teamed together, they have remained undefeated, and he says they plan to keep that streak alive tonight.
Ospreay then jokes that the last time they teamed together, Omega looked exhausted after returning from his injury and near-death experience. He tells Omega not to try to be a hero this time and says if he needs a break, he can tag in “your old mate Bill” to pick up the slack.
Omega fires back with a playful response, saying Ospreay also has a big match coming up at the pay-per-view. He tells Ospreay that if he starts feeling tired or his neck begins bothering him, he can always tag him in because he’ll be there for his partner.
Ospreay can only shake his head and call Omega’s joke “terrible.”
Jon Moxley then walks into the room and sarcastically remarks that he knows that look and that there is clearly “no tension” between the two. Omega responds that there wasn’t any until Moxley showed up, prompting Moxley to simply tell them he’ll leave them to it before walking away.
Kevin Knight (c) vs. Darby Allin – AEW TNT Championship
Darby Allin takes out Kevin Knight with a suicide dive before the opening bell. Capitalizing on the momentum, Darby follows up with an elbow drop from the top turnbuckle on the ringside table. The referee finally signals for the bell, officially kicking off the opening contest on AEW Dynamite.
Knight targets Darby Allin’s eye before shoving him into the guardrail. He then tells the fans to move out of the way and uses the guardrail for leverage as he drives a vicious elbow into Darby.
The next big spot of the match sees Knight catapult Darby face-first into the steel steps at ringside. The challenger is busted wide open!
Darby refuses to stay down, rallying with back-to-back Code Reds that leave Kevin Knight reeling.
Knight shoves Darby into referee Paul Turner, taking the official out of the match. With the referee down, Knight grabs the TNT Championship belt and looks to use it as a weapon, but Darby counters with a Scorpion Death Drop.
Darby heads to the top rope for the Coffin Drop, but Knight cuts him off before he can connect and blasts him across the back with the title belt. Knight then delivers a coast-to-coast dropkick, drags the referee back into position, and connects with the UFO Splash to score the victory.
Winner and still TNT Champion: Kevin Knight
Kevin Knight’s celebration is cut short by the arrival of Kyle Fletcher. Before Fletcher can enter the ring, the music of his tag team partner for the night, Kazuchika Okada, hits. Commentary points out that another member of The Don Callis Family has overshadowed The Jet’s post-match moment.
Okada then heads to the ring for the next match on AEW Dynamite, where he and Fletcher are set to take on Brodido.
Grade: B-
A fun match to kick off AEW Dynamite. They kept it short and fast-paced, making the most of the time they were given. That said, this feels like a match that should have been saved for AEW Redemption rather than being given away on a regular episode of Dynamite.
Also, unless Darby Allin costs Kevin Knight the AEW World Championship against Kenny Omega this Sunday, Knight’s victory here would make the entire feud feel largely pointless.
Kevin Knight Celebrates His Win Before Kyle Fletcher Raises The Stakes
Mark Davis says the only way he will have a match at AEW Dynasty this Sunday is if Andrade can somehow recover after he left him lying outside Fenway.
Renee Paquette then turns her attention to Kevin Knight, noting that he has a huge opportunity this Sunday when he challenges Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship.
Knight agrees and says he knows he’ll become “Jet 2 Belts” at Dynasty. He boasts that he not only broke Darby Allin tonight, but also broke the record for the most TNT Championship defenses, surpassing Kyle Fletcher’s previous mark. Knight adds that he accomplished the feat without any help from The Don Callis Family.
As Renee asks what is next for the group with their tag team match moments away, Kyle Fletcher interrupts. Fletcher warns Renee not to get too close before turning his attention to Knight. He says he hopes Knight does become “Jet 2 Belts” this Sunday, but takes issue with Knight claiming he doesn’t need The Don Callis Family.
Fletcher tells Knight to take his hand off his title and insists he doesn’t need the family’s help to retain the AEW International Championship either. To prove his point, Fletcher says he’ll speak to Tony Khan and have everyone banned from ringside for his International Title defense against Bandido at AEW Redemption. He then raises the stakes for tonight’s tag team match, announcing that every member of The Don Callis Family is banned from ringside before ordering them to leave the ring.
ProtOkada (Kyle Fletcher & Kazuchika Okada) vs. Brodido (Brody King & Bandido)
Bandido attempts a springboard moonsault, but Kyle Fletcher catches him in mid-air with a perfectly timed superkick. Fletcher charges in for a running kick, only for Bandido to counter by popping him up and planting him with a facebuster.
Okada ripcords Brody King into Kyle Fletcher, allowing Fletcher to connect with a superkick. Okada then goes for a Rainmaker, but King ducks, causing Okada to accidentally strike his own partner instead.
King sends Okada crashing out of the ring with a forearm strike before following up with a suicide dive. Back inside the ring, Bandido catches Fletcher with a 21 Plex to score the victory for his team.
Winners: Brodido
Fletcher blames Okada for their loss, but The Rainmaker can only offer his signature apology. Fletcher, Mark Davis, and Lance Archer then corner Brodido, but Andrade arrives to even the odds.
Davis and Andrade trade insults before the segment comes to an end with Andrade showing off the Dynamite Diamond Ring.
Grade: B+
Solid tag team action with a closing sequence that got a big reaction from me. AEW has been teasing a potential Fletcher vs. Okada match, and tonight’s bout seemingly added more fuel to that story when Okada accidentally took out Fletcher with the Rainmaker.
As for Bandido, him scoring the pinfall tonight could be a sign that he won’t be walking out victorious this Sunday at AEW Redemption.
The Painmaker vs. The Psycho Killer Promo Airs on AEW Dynamite
A video package for Chris Jericho’s Painmaker persona airs, highlighting some of the most brutal and violent moments from his AEW career.
Jericho delivers a haunting message, describing the nature of pain and how it has shaped him. He then turns his attention to Tommaso Ciampa and promises that at AEW Redemption, hell is coming for him.
Willow Nightingale and Thekla Face-to-Face Ahead Of AEW Redemption
Willow Nightingale comes face-to-face with Thekla and says she appreciates having the chance to speak with her directly instead of being attacked from behind.
Willow says Thekla asked if she was ready for this moment, and she confidently confirms that she is. She points out that she fought back from a shoulder injury, won the Casino Gauntlet, and now stands just one match away from achieving her dream of becoming the AEW Women’s World Champion.
Thekla mocks Willow’s optimism and welcomes her back before claiming she is nothing more than a person hiding behind a fake smile. “The Toxic One” says she doesn’t believe Willow’s cheerful personality is genuine. She accuses Willow of bottling up her true emotions and hiding behind a mask every time she walks into the arena.
Thekla says she will do Willow a favor at AEW Redemption by beating the “poison” out of her and exposing who she really is.
Willow fires back, questioning whether Thekla truly believes her smile is fake. She says the difference between them is that she has never had to convince anyone who she is, adding that Thekla’s belief that her happiness is an act says more about Thekla than it does about her.
Willow Nightingale continues to fire back at Thekla, saying she believes Thekla talks a big game because she feels small inside. Willow acknowledges Thekla’s confidence and swagger, admitting it has taken her far, including becoming a two-time champion.
However, Willow says Thekla’s titles are not what matters to her, as the AEW Women’s World Championship is the only prize she cares about. She adds that Thekla is simply a shortcut on her path to winning the title.
Mick Foley Brings Up TBS History While Praising Willow Nightingale
As Thekla steps closer, Mick Foley interrupts and says that despite their differences, he sees a lot of himself in Willow. Foley points out that both he and Willow have been champions on TBS and have endured incredible punishment while still finding a way to smile through the pain. He jokes that Willow’s smile has a few more teeth than his did.
Thekla sarcastically calls Foley’s words beautiful before telling him to shut up.
Willow immediately steps in and tells Thekla that the disrespect has gone far enough. She calls out Thekla for her attitude before praising Foley as not only one of her favourites but also a legend.
Willow says that while she and Foley both smile, they are also willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. She points out that Foley has done some sick and twisted things inside the ring and promises Thekla that she is willing to do the same to her at AEW Redemption.
Willow admits that despite their differences, she and Thekla have one thing in common: they both have everything to lose. She says they both want to walk into All In as the AEW Women’s World Champion, and promises to put every ounce of her soul and heart into making sure she is the one who leaves victorious.
Thekla Attacks Willow Nightingale On AEW Dynamite
Thekla laughs off Willow Nightingale calling her a “dumb bitch,” joking that she never expected to hear those words come out of Willow’s mouth.
The AEW Women’s World Champion then delivers a vicious warning ahead of their match at AEW Redemption. Thekla says that when she is standing over Willow on Sunday with her championships, while Willow is battered, beaten, broken, and bloodied, she wants Willow to remember one thing: “Smile anyway.”
Thekla mockingly smiles at Willow before shoving Mick Foley aside and blindsiding Willow with the microphone. She then throws Willow down onto the ramp and drives the microphone into the side of her head, leaving Willow rocked.
Thekla continues to taunt Willow while carrying her collection of championships. She then heads toward the ring as Foley is left with a difficult decision.
Before Thekla can do more damage, Willow suddenly charges back with a pounce, sending the AEW Women’s World Champion crashing out of the ring.
We Hear From Hikaru Shida & Maya World
A video package airs highlighting the heated rivalry between Hikaru Shida and Maya World following their confrontation on AEW Collision last week.
Maya World says nobody expected her to make it to the Owen finals, but she proved everyone wrong. She adds that the tournament validated what she has been saying all along: “It’s my world now.”
Shida responds by saying that after successfully defending her championship, some unknown competitor suddenly inserted herself into her business.
Maya acknowledges that Shida returned from injury and became a completely different competitor, but she insists that her time has arrived.
Shida fires back, declaring that Maya World will become nothing more than a small footnote in the Era of the Ace.
Maya reminds Shida that she already took her kendo stick and promises that at AEW Redemption, she will take her championship as well.
Shida closes the video with a confident message: “The best… is… SHIDA!”
Jay White vs. Clark Connors
Connors sets up for a spear, but Jay White counters by turning the momentum into a chokehold submission. Connors struggles to escape, but is ultimately forced to tap out, giving White the victory.
Winner: Jay White
White hits a Blade Runner on Connors, but David Finlay immediately takes out White with a Shillelagh shot. The rest of the Bang Bang Gang then arrives to chase Finlay away.
Juice Robinson swings a chain as tensions continue to escalate, while Finlay throws a chair toward the ring but does not enter. The segment ends with Finlay backing away with Connors as the Bang Bang Gang stands tall inside the ring.
Grade: C+
I would’ve booked White to score a dominant squash victory over Connors. A Blade Runner immediately after the opening bell would have been the ideal finish: no unnecessary dragging and no interference.
That said, we know Tony Khan loves giving wrestlers time to have a match, even if it sometimes comes at the expense of advancing the storyline.
The Death Riders Attack Cope & Cage Backstage On AEW Dynamite
Cope reflects on last week’s AEW Dynamite, noting that C&C and the Bang Bang Gang finally managed to get on the same page. He adds that they also challenged PAC and Claudio Castagnoli for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
Before Cope can finish his thought, PAC and Castagnoli launch a surprise attack from behind, sending Cope and Christian Cage crashing into equipment cases.
PAC continues the assault, stomping on Cope while he is struggling to recover. Castagnoli then stacks Cope and Cage in the corner as PAC proceeds to cut a promo.
PAC says he cannot believe Cope and Cage had the audacity to challenge them for the tag team titles. He questions whether that was a wise decision for two veterans who have been around for so long.
PAC mocks the idea that Cope and Cage could simply walk over them or use them as part of their “grand homecoming tour.” He warns that they have bitten off more than they can chew.
PAC then promises that at AEW Redemption, he and Castagnoli will remind the legends exactly who they are and what The Death Riders are capable of.
Divine Dominion (Megan Bayne & Lena Kross) (c) vs. Sisters of Sin (Skye Blue & Julia Hart) – No DQ Match for the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship
The finish sees Megan Bayne and Lena Kross hit Julia Hart with a double chokeslam to pick up the victory.
Winners and still AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions: Divine Dominion
Grade: B-
Julia Hart’s accidental weapon strike left Skye Blue busted open in the early stages of the match. Other highlights included Megan Bayne drilling Blue with a stiff chair throw and delivering a chokeslam through a table.
That being said, Bayne continues to be reckless inside the ring, and there is a concern that she could seriously injure someone if she keeps wrestling with the same level of aggression and disregard for safety.
The Bang Bang Gang Wants The Dogs In A Double Chain Tag Team Match At AEW Redemption
Juice Robinson calls out David Finlay, asking where he is running to after attacking Jay White. Juice questions whether Finlay is trying to pick up the pieces after Jay defeats Clark Connors or planning another sneak attack.
Robinson then proposes a stipulation for AEW Dynasty, suggesting that the two sides settle their differences in a Double Chain Tag Team Match. He tells Finlay that he cannot run anymore.
Jay White then addresses Finlay, saying that at Dynasty, they are going to give him the beating his father should have given him. White says they will use the chains to finally make a man out of Finlay.
The Switchblade closes the message by asking if Finlay is down with that, before the Bang Bang Gang deliver their signature response: “GUNS UP!”
Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay & Jon Moxley vs. Don Callis Family (Hechicero, Brian Cage & Jake Doyle)
Ospreay and Omega connect with a Hidden Blade/V-Trigger combination on Hechicero to score the victory.
Winners: Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay & Jon Moxley
Following the match, Jon Moxley confronts Kenny Omega over accidentally hitting him with a V-Trigger earlier in the contest. Omega explains that it was a mistake and offers a handshake, but Moxley responds by shoving him.
Omega shoves Moxley back, prompting Will Ospreay to step in and try to calm things down. However, Omega accidentally strikes Ospreay, leading to a confrontation between the two partners.
The Young Bucks then make their way to the ring. Matt Jackson gets in Moxley’s face and is quickly shoved aside, causing Nick Jackson to attack Moxley. Ospreay takes down Nick, while Moxley and Matt begin brawling.
Omega tries to pull Ospreay away from Nick, but gets accidentally caught with an elbow from Ospreay. Rocky Romero and Trent Beretta then arrive to cause a distraction, but Omega takes them out and sets up for a V-Trigger.
Before Omega can connect, Kevin Knight appears and springboards into the ring, smashing Omega with a championship belt.
Knight then stands tall, raising both the AEW TNT Championship and the AEW World Championship above his head. He taunts Omega with the two titles as the AEW World Champion lies battered on the mat, blood pouring from his forehead, bringing AEW Dynamite to a chaotic close.
Overall Grade: B-
Tony Khan really needs to stop bloating his pay-per-view cards. This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite felt like an excuse to add more matches to AEW Redemption, which currently features nine matches at the time of writing.
The Bang Bang Gang vs. The Dogs Double Chain Tag Team Match could have easily been saved for this week’s AEW Collision or next week’s Dynamite. Adding it to an already stacked pay-per-view card feels like overkill.
As for this week’s AEW Dynamite, the opening contest for the TNT Championship was solid, with Kevin Knight retaining his title after a hard-fought battle. I still stand by my earlier point that this match would have been better suited for AEW Redemption since this was built as a pay-per-view feud. Now, the big question is whether Darby Allin will cost Knight his match against Kenny Omega this Sunday.
I also enjoyed the tag team match featuring ProtOKada against Brodido. Bandido’s 21 Plex remains one of my favourite AEW finishers, and I expect him and Kyle Fletcher to tear the house down when they collide for the International Championship at AEW Redemption.
Thekla and Willow Nightingale’s face-to-face segment dragged on for too long. This would have worked much better as a sit-down interview with Mick Foley moderating the conversation.
The Jay White vs. Clark Connors match was the weakest contest of the night, mainly because it was not booked as a squash. White was competing in his first singles match in over a year, and in my opinion, the angle would have been far more effective if he had simply caught Connors with a Blade Runner moments after the bell and scored a decisive victory.
The AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship match was solid, with Skye Blue taking some brutal punishment throughout. Megan Bayne and Lena Kross retained the titles, and hopefully Tony Khan does not put them on the AEW Redemption pre-show.
The main event trios match fell short of my expectations. At one point, Moxley’s boot did not even appear to connect with his opponent, so we will see if that moment makes its way into Botchamania. The post-match angle mostly consisted of shoving and miscommunication, but Kevin Knight’s springboard attack looked fantastic.
