Memo To WWE Critics

My latest column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is a memo to WWE critics. The following is an excerpt:

This column isn’t for the dedicated wrestling fan as most of my writing normally is. This is for the dedicated wrestling fan to pass on to someone they know who could use some education in professional wrestling.

Another case of professional wrestling hypocrisy happened this week.

WWE continues to push Rusev and Lana, who touts Russia as the supreme nation and puts down America. In the build-up to his match with Big Show, Rusev threatened to rip down an American flag. Just before he could, a man portraying an American military personnel member and WWE “fan” jumped in the ring, and Rusev kicked him in the face.

The man was not actually a member of the U.S. military. He, like all of WWE’s extra roles, was a local independent wrestler who got a quick payday and the exposure of national television. He was a trained wrestler capable of being kicked in the face by Rusev.

I’ve received a decent number of emails from people upset or questioning why WWE pulled this stunt. Perhaps my moral compass is broken, but I don’t see anything wrong with this.

I didn’t see anything wrong with Big Show pulling down the Russian flag a few weeks ago, when people freaked out. I didn’t see anything wrong with the “We The People” promo material Zeb Colter used to do that got Glenn Beck all irritated. I don’t see anything wrong with what Rusev did Monday.

It’s entertainment, remember. It’s not real, remember.

That’s what frustrates me — critics love to say how fake WWE is. I don’t even know if I should use the word critics. Movie critic, theater critic, music critic — those all are people who have an understanding of the genre they review and talk about. I can be a WWE critic because I know what I’m watching and criticizing. I’m giving my opinion on the execution of the show.
