This Day in History: NXT Takeover is Born, Austin vs. Benoit, One of WCW’s Particularly Stupid Angles; Today’s Wrestling Birthdays

This Day in History

-Today is the one year anniversary of the first ever NXT Takeover live event on the WWE Network. Charlotte defeated Natalya in an incredible match to become the new NXT Women’s Championship, and Andrian Neville successfully defended the NXT Championship against Tyson Kidd in the main event.

-CM Punk defeated Elijah Burke in an “Extreme Rules” match at a WWE ECW TV taping in 2007.

-In 2001, then-WWF Champion Steve Austin successfully defended his title against Chris Benoit in one of the best matches in Smackdown television history.

-In one of the most convoluted programs in the already ridiculously convoluted WCW year 2000, Kevin Nash gave the WCW Heavyweight Championship back to Ric Flair on an episode of Nitro. Flair then almost immediately dropped the belt to Jeff Jarrett. Of course, this was after JJ beat David Arquette for the belt, then dropped it to Flair, the belt was vacated by Russo, won by Jeff, then dropped to Nash, and we’ve come full circle. This was all in the course of about three weeks.
