Identity Of Survivor Series?
Shane Shoemaker posted a new blog on CSRWrestling.com where he looks at what the identity of Survivor Series is anymore on the WWE calendar of annual events. Here’s a sample:
The inception of Survivor Series back in 1987 — the second longest running special event outside WrestleMania — started as an event solely centered on tag team wrestling, which for its time, was considered a major part of the industry unlike today. The event is still considered one of the “Big Four” special events of the year along with the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and SummerSlam. However, now I’m not so sure it’s considered one of the “Big Four” or part of the “Less Than Meaningful Eight” (or nine) remaining special events on the schedule. Because at some point, in the illustrious history of WWE’s what once was known as pay-per-views started, Survivor Series lost its intended identity and meaningful spot on the WWE event calendar.
The history of the event with once in a lifetime moments is undeniable, though.
The obvious — and we’ll go back to it — the infamous Montreal Screwjob that changed the lives of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Vince McMahon forever; not to mention the business itself changing forever from that point forward.
This year signifies the 25th anniversary of The Undertaker, who has had his fair share of moments outside of his memorable debut back in 1990. The Undertaker also captured his very first WWE championship from Hulk Hogan in 1991. Someone to do the same thing, The Rock, who made his debut at the 1996 Survivor Series and surprised everyone two years later when winning a 14-man tournament to capture his first WWE championship.
And speaking of debuts, the long-awaited arrival of the former WCW icon Sting made his surprising debut at last years event.
So with an event that has had some of the more memorable moments in WWE history with famous debuts, title changes, and tag team matches — when did the event lose its identity?
