The Ridiculous WWE Treatment Of The Wyatt Family

My Friday column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is on the treatment of The Wyatt Family. Here’s an excerpt:

Don’t be surprised if a picture of The Wyatt Family and big print reading “careers missing” appear on milk cartons any day now.

Cheap jokes — I use them to distract us from the pain. The pain that comes from the state that is The Wyatt Family. Bigger than ever in numbers. Bigger than ever in size. Yet, the strumming of the bass line in the music signaling their arrival has never meant less to me.

The Wyatt Family are heels. Heels are supposed to lose. I get it, but what’s a heel with no credibility? That’s the definition of enhancement talent or the more affectionate term of jobber.

At least when they were losing to the likes of John Cena and Undertaker at WrestleManias and Survivor Series, it provided a certain amount of credibility by association. You share the ring with those legends, you can only look so bad. It’s the more recent treatment that makes it look like they’re dancing in quicksand.

I don’t see the benefit in every win being negated by a loss. Nobody goes to the Hall of Fame with a .500 record. They got a win over the original ECW hardcore legends, all in their 40s, but that was only after they were beaten a few times before that by them.
