WWE’s road to SummerSlam may not only be heating up on television. A new backstage report suggests several of the company’s biggest stars are engaged in an increasing battle to protect their spots at the top of the card. This news becomes pertinent as we head into one of the year’s biggest premium live events.
While backstage competition has always been part of the business, the latest report indicates the stakes have grown even higher as WWE’s main event picture continues to evolve.
Report suggests WWE’s top stars are battling for main event positioning
According to WRKD Wrestling, an internal power struggle is developing among several high-profile WWE stars as they compete for creative direction, television time, marquee matches, and top billing on major shows.
The report was accompanied by a GIF of Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns engaged in a tug-of-war over the WWE Championship, symbolizing the reported battle for positioning behind the scenes.
The timing becomes notable given the dramatic changes to WWE’s landscape following Night of Champions. Sami Zayn captured the Undisputed WWE Championship after defeating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a triple threat match, while Roman Reigns is preparing to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against longtime rival Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.
Meanwhile, King of the Ring winner Oba Femi surprised many by passing on his guaranteed world title opportunity. He aims to settle his rivalry with Brock Lesnar instead. The duo will collide inside Hell in a Cell at SummerSlam, with the series tied at one victory apiece. In the women’s division, champions Liv Morgan and Tiffany Stratton, Queen of the Ring IYO SKY, and the injured Rhea Ripley also remain key figures near the top of WWE programming.
The report further suggests that WWE’s continued focus on a select group of headline acts has intensified the competition. Both established stars and rising names look to cement their place. It’s a reminder that, much like a Royal Rumble, earning a top spot is one thing — holding onto it is an entirely different challenge.
As of now, WWE has yet to announce which matches will headline either night of SummerSlam. Moreover, information about the division of the other matches across both nights has yet to come to light. This leaves plenty of intrigue both on-screen and reportedly behind the curtain.
