Bret Hart On His WMXII Iron Man Match w/ Shawn Michaels: “I Think It Was The Greatest Match Of All Time”

Bret’s in-depth analysis of his WrestleMania XII Iron Man Match begins at the 29:05 minute mark in the embedded audio player. Some of his transcribed quotes cab be found below it:

On the pre-match vignettes that aired on RAW before WrestleMania XII that showed Shawn training like Rocky in an old gym and Bret training at his home in Canada:

Bret: It was done with maybe the best intentions. Shawn, if you remember, was kicked in the head by Owen and they took him out on a stretcher back in December. Then they gave him like three or four months off to get ready for this Iron Man Match. I was on the road going to India, Kuwait and they just ran me in to the ground. I was wrestling Undertaker, Yokozuna and Diesel in those days. I was wrestling big guys, mostly taking a lot of hard falls from turnbuckles and getting chokeslammed. I just got beat up. Physically beat up. You can’t really build up your cardio up wrestling guys like Yoko and Undertaker. In my own mindset I was a huge underdog going in to that match. I never really noticed until I saw the vignettes of Shawn doing 100 upside sit-ups hanging from a bar. Or running up football stadium steps. If I had that kind of time to spend days and days training and getting ready for this match I think I would have been doing the same thing. I was just the opposite. I remember sitting on the toilet throwing up in the sink in India. Sick as a dog. I was a few weeks away from that match. I knew, I said, “They’ve set me up for disaster.” I just won’t be in shape to wrestle an hour match with a guy who all he’s got on his mind is to sort of blow me out of the water. I will say one thing about WrestleMania XII. It was a great match. I think it was the greatest match of all time. I’ve never seen a match that topped it.

On Bret deciding to put his infamous Hitman sunglasses on his six-year-old son Blade before the bout:

Blade:  I remember being at lots of PPVs but I think that was the one and only time I got the glasses. That’s one of those nights that always kind of stood out to me. I remember when we’d always be out of town we’d have big PPV parties at the house when most of the kids were at the show. You’d always go home to school, back from the road and it’s the talk of the town. Especially in Elementary. It was always a big deal.
