Randy Orton returned after weeks on WWE TV at the Extreme Rules PPV where he appeared after Jeff Hardy‘s match against Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE United States Championship. He had a stare-down with Nakamura but attacked Hardy with a low blow, effectively turning heel.
He then went on to interfere in Hardy and Nakamura’s rematch on SmackDown Live, where he attacked Hardy and threw him over the announce table. His heel promo on SmackDown Live this week received much praise.

The WrestleVotes Twitter account has revealed how Orton’s heel turn came to be.
Randy Orton reportedly wanted a heel turn for some time and had been pushing for it. The account tweeted, “Regarding Randy Orton’s heel turn, it has been something he’s wanted for a while now. Orton definitely pushed for it. I’m expecting him to be the top heel on SmackDown going forward. With him, Nakamura, Joe, Miz & Almas, SD has a strong mix of main event level heels.”
