WWE is thin on established proven commentators to narrate their programming. Some fans underestimate how important a good commentator is for the product. Its common sense. You are having people pay to see and watch your stories. The stories can be told in the ring but much of that is via action, you need the right voice and tone to be the soundtrack of the conflict. Works for wreslting, works for documentaries, works for movies. One of contributing reasons the movie “Goodfellas” was so damn good is because Ray Liotta understood how to speak as Henry Hill!
Michael Cole is and will be for the next 5 years the voice of the company. Constantly ripped for sitting in the chair that many believe still should be occupied by Jim Ross, ripped for his annoying “And I quote” and ripped for the heel characteristics he has adopted in his play by play.
To those complaints I say; we all love Jim Ross but if they haven't brought Ross back to RAW full time yet, it probably isn't going to happen. The hysterical reactions that hate Cole for being the pesky voice of this computer and his character in love with The Miz are exactly what the WWE wants.
Its the same philosophy of reactions everyone on who reads Mark Madden here on Wrestlezone and catches him with me on the Chair Shot Reality gets, he is a character. He says certain things a certain way and you react. Job well done! Guy may have been on-air in a crap period of WCW, but he was on-air nonetheless and look at what he had to work with in terms of talent and story. Imagine him on-air in the mid 90's with ECW. A lot of potential there for a lot of reasons.
Anyways, back to current day, so you have Michael Cole as the play by play voice of RAW, Smackdown and the Pay Per Views. That is a problem. Not so much at this very moment, in fact the exceeded exposure he is getting is great to keep furthering his heel character for whatever purpose that is. My best guess is a mixed match that will eventually involve Jerry Lawler. Cole working all of those shows is a problem down the line as he shouldn't be expected to uphold that schedule for the next couple years.
Play by play is a hard to please role in the WWE. You gotta call a wrestling match that is in front of you but don't refer to sport as wrestling or use too many wrestling move terminology. You must go against what you are taught in english class and avoid pronouns. He is not in a lot of pain. Cena is in pain because of what CM Punk did to Cena. Sell the characters names. Just ask Mick Foley what happens if you don't. So who else do we have behind Michael Cole? Who WILL be the next consistent play by play voice for the WWE?
