Random February Thoughts

Kudos to the team at Wrestlezone for breaking the Vince Russo story. To all the other sites who hate on Wrestlezone.com, you can’t deny they got this one and the editorial growth of this site continues.

When I heard about the changes in TNA, I was hopeful. Whether you liked Vince Russo’s style or not, wrestling booking is all about change. Keeping things fresh is critical. The fact he’s worked this long is both a testament to his political savvy and a blatant disregard by his employers to this undeniable fact. Initial reports of David Lagana taking over sounded like a positive move but now it looks like more of the same Hogan/Bischoff show. Mark Madden encapsulated it perfectly…check it out here. I am still hopeful that Lagana can improve things but wrestling bookers who center the show around themselves historically run the ship onto the rocks.

I saw that Van Halen is touring with Kool and the Gang… strange double bill but one I would love to see.

Average low temperature at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on April 7th is 41 degrees. For next year’s WrestleMania, it’s going to feel cold, but not unbearable to the fans, who can bundle up but what about the wrestlers? I ring announced a show at the Central Florida Fairgrounds in December 1991 and that was damn cold. Right around 50. Main event was Mondo Kleen vs Blackjack Mulligan. Ball freezing. What will happen next April? Pray for an Inferno Match…

Baby Doll, Dusty Rhodes and Tully Blanchard made an interesting soap opera that culminated in violence and betrayal. What’s the payoff with Eve, Cena and Zack Ryder?

TNA booking Brandon Jacobs was smart but since his NFL career is nearing the end of the line, could Jacobs have some interest in wrestling? Smart guy, cuts a great promo, great size for wrestling. I’d be interested…

Just read that Allen Iverson made $154 million dollars in his NBA career and now is broke. He’s 36 and broke… Another reminder to all my friends in wrestling to please save your money, eliminate wasteful spending and live now like your broke so you don’t wind up that way.

So, the WWE has already parked Brodus Clay because he isn’t good enough in the ring. I would like to sit down with Vince and show him a DVD with Dusty Rhodes, Abdullah the Butcher and several other great “characters” in wrestling history. If every wrestler on the show wrestles the same, then what do you have? Now, if he’s big and clumsy and a danger to himself and others, that’s one thing but something tells me this is because of the whispers from those who may have heard the pops Funkasaurus got and said something, cutting the legs out from under him.

In ROH news, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin are frustrated with everything since Final Battle. They still can’t believe the crowd turned on them in NYC and think they are better than every tag team in the company. The issue with the Briscoe’s isn’t going away soon and I have to wonder if and how it can ever be settled.

Speaking of the Briscoes, here’s their latest… shoutouts to Terry Funk, “Brutal” Bob Evans and beer mugs to the back of the head. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELOn2amIn_w

Kevin Steen has been barking about Davey Richards for months, critical of the ROH World Champion’s devotion to athletic endeavors outside pro wrestling. Davey’s been relatively quiet but word is he is sufficiently annoyed. Richards has said that he has no respect for Kevin Steen but I would expect him to speak more succinctly about “Wrestling’s Worst Nightmare” soon.

ROH’s 10th Anniversary “Young Wolves Rising” is Sunday March 4th on PPV for only $9.99 from NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom, proving that Ring of Honor is committed to finding and featuring the best young wrestlers in the industry. How great is it that both former Future Shock partners and two young lions, Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly will be on opposing teams in the main event in the biggest city in the world?

It’s the best story in New York since Jeremy Lin and I’ll have a big feature on Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly and the young stars of today and tomorrow in Ring of Honor next week here on Wrestlezone.com.
