The Unique Talent That Is Brock Lesnar & Benefit Of Watching Him At Non-Televised WWE Events

stephen amellMy Monday column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review talks about Brock Lesnar and his unique talent. Here’s an excerpt:

Every sport has that once-in-a-lifetime performer. For WWE, it’s Brock Lesnar.

Last Friday night, Lesnar had a match against Sheamus at a non-televised WWE event in Houston. It was an interesting use of Lesnar, who I’m sure we’ll find out boosted the event’s attendance when the numbers become public.

The seven-minute match was filmed by a fan with a cell phone. This match highlights unique beauty of a Lesnar performance. There was no WWE cameras at ringside to play to. There was no backstory or hype to the match like there would be for a pay-per-view match. Everything was stripped away, and it was seven minutes of a simple and masterful formula on display that nobody else can duplicate in professional wrestling.

It was a formula that provided a match that comes off as a real fight. It was physical and believable while keeping elements of the showmanship in professional wrestling.

Both Lesnar and Sheamus are known for a hard-hitting style in the ring and both delivered. Sheamus gave a knee to Lesnar, who was bent over the middle rope and it cut Lesnar open immediately. The visual of blood in the final minute of the match was a perfect topping.
