AEW Grand Slam: Mexico Results:

Tonight’s AEW special kicks off with Hangman Page making his way to the ring to speak. Page cuts a promo in Spanish, Excalibur attempts to translate, but Hangman keeps talking over him, so it doesn’t work at all.

Dax Harwood, Volador Jr., Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita, Lance Archer, Josh Alexander, and Hechicero (w/ Stokely Hathaway) vs. Bandido, Atlantis, Atlantis Jr., Templario, Brody King, Daniel Garcia, and Adam Cole

  • The finish of the match saw Atlantis catch Dax Harwood in a small package to score the pinfall victory for his team.

Winners: Bandido, Atlantis, Atlantis Jr., Templario, Brody King, Daniel Garcia, and Adam Cole

Grade: B+

Well, this certainly didn’t go according to plan. Multiple participants in tonight’s matchups have been changed without any prior notice. Very weird. I’m sure a story will come out regarding this in the days to come. As for the match itself, it was entertaining. However, the finish was anti-climactic and I need someone to explain to me why CMLL fans seemingly hate Atlantis and Atlantis Jr. so freaking much.

A video recap plays of last week’s contract signing between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada.

Mark Briscoe vs. Kazuchika Okada (w/ Don Callis)

  • The finish of the match saw Kazuchika Okada hit Mark Briscoe with a Rain Maker to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: Kazuchika Okada

After the match, Okada beat on Briscoe a bit more before leaving with Callis.

Grade: B

The match was fine, but nothing overly special from either man. It was about as paint-by-numbers for these two athletes are you’re going to get. There was nothing wrong with the match, but it simply didn’t do anything for me tonight.

MJF (w/ The Hurt Syndicate) vs. Mistico

  • The finish of the match saw MJF purposely kick Mistico low to get himself disqualified

Winner: Mistico via disqualification

After the match, The Hurt Syndicate attacks Mistico, and MJF takes off his mask and puts it on. Multiple luchadores came out to distract The Hurt Syndicate, which allowed Speedball Mike Bailey and Kevin Knight to attack them from behind and send them packing.

Grade: B

I expected a lot more out of this match than what we got. It just kinda fell flat for me. The crowd LOVES Mistico and I thought we’d get a really great match from these two, but it just didn’t happen. It is what it is.

4 Million Pesos High Flying 4-Way: Mascara Dorada vs. Ricochet vs. Hologram vs. Lio Rush (w/ Action Andretti)

  • The finish of the match saw Hologram hit Lio Rush with the Portalbomb to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: Hologram

Grade: A-

Easily the best thing on tonight’s show so far from an in-ring standpoint. These four men saw the opportunity to go out there and steal the show and absolutely succeeded. There are two big matches left to go, but thus far, this was far and away the best thing on the show.

CMLL Women’s Championship: Mercedes Moné vs. Zeuxis (c)

  • The finish of the match saw Mercedes Moné hit Zeuxis with a C4 variation from the top rope to score the pinfall victory.

Winner: And NEW CMLL Women’s Champion, Mercedes Moné

After the match, a video played on the Tron for Toni Storm. Mina Shirakawa distracted Mercedes on the stage, which allowed Storm to get Mercedes from behind. They brawled out onto the stage before it was broken up by multiple referees.

Grade: B+

Not surprising here, in my opinion. I would have been more surprised had Zeuxis retained. I still believe Toni Storm is going to retain at All In, but we’ll see how it goes. This was a fun match, and a title change helped make tonight’s show more important.

Will Ospreay, The Opps, and Swerve Strickland (w/ Prince Nana) vs. The Beast Mortos, the Young Bucks, Jon Moxley, and Wheeler Yuta (w/ Marina Shafir)

  • The finish of the match saw Jon Moxley roll up Swerve Strickland with a handful of tights to score the pinfall victory for his team.

Winners: The Beast Mortos, the Young Bucks, Jon Moxley, and Wheeler Yuta

Grade: A-

After the match, Hangman Page makes his way to the ring and brawls with Jon Moxley. Page goes for the Buckshot Lariat, but Moxley moves and hits Matt Jackson instead. Moxley tries to come in with his briefcase, but The Opps and Ospreay get involved. Moxley backs down and leaves as AEW Grand Slam: Mexico goes off the air.

AEW Grand Slam: Mexico Review:

This was a show of two halves for me. The first half of the show felt rather underwhelming for such a big event. The final three matches really saved this show for me personally. With the lack of build tonight towards All In, AEW has a unique opportunity to have a really big episode of Collision this weekend. Let’s see if that happens.

Grade: B+
