The Rock Had Talks With WBD About The Direction Of The DCEU Before Black Adam Flop

Prior to 2022’s Black Adam release, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav on what it would take to “fix” the DCEU.

According to a new report from Wall Street Journal, Johnson and Zaslav reportedly talked about the DCEU. WSJ notes that talks between Johnson and Zaslav ended after Black Adam came out. The film, which also starred Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and more, was considered by most to be a flop.

The movie, which had a budget of somewhere between $190-260 million, made $393.5 million at the global box office. While it did technically outgross its budget, the movie did not do enough to break even, let alone profit. The film was criticized by the majority, with many also mocking the marketing of the film, which saw The Rock talk about the balance of power in the DCEU.

At the time of its development, Black Adam was thought to help usher in a new era of the DCEU. The film even featured Henry Cavill’s Superman appear in a post-credits scene. However, due to the film’s poor showing, WB pivoted. They named Peter Safran and James Gunn as co-CEOs of the new DC Studios, which just released their first film, Superman, this week.
