NWA National Champion Reacts To AEW Creating Its Own National Title

The NWA National Heavyweight Champion is not a fan of AEW introducing its own National Championship.

AEW President Tony Khan took to social media to announce the introduction of the new AEW National Championship before this week’s episode of Dynamite. The inaugural champion will be crowned at AEW Full Gear on November 22 in a Casino Gauntlet Match, and Bobby Lashley, Ricochet, and Shelton Benjamin have been announced for the bout so far.

However, reigning NWA National Heavyweight Champion Mike Mondo had a strong reaction to the announcement. He took to X/Twitter to claim that the title he holds is the only prestigious National Championship.

“Let me be CLEAR. There is only ONE NWA & there is only one PRESTIGIOUS National Championship that holds legit lineage & has for decades. So to Tony Khan or anyone else confused… here’s the legit title, with the company it belongs to & the legit National Champion! MY NAME IS MIKE MONDO.”

Before He Became The NWA National Champion, Mike Mondo Was Mikey Of The Spirit Squad In WWE

Reigning NWA National Heavyweight Champion Mike Mondo is known for his time in WWE as part of The Spirit Squad. He debuted as part of the male cheerleader group in 2006 and assisted Vince McMahon in his feud against D-Generation X.

He’s also a former WWE World Tag Team Champion, as he and Kenny defeated Kane and The Big Show to win the title on the April 3, 2006, episode of Raw.

His run with the company ended in June 2008, and he went on to compete on the independent circuit and made his NWA debut earlier this year. He did return to WWE for a brief time in 2016 alongside Kenny to feud with Dolph Ziggler, who was Nicky in The Spirit Squad.
