John Cena Wanted A Full Year Retirement Tour, But WWE Only Needed 36 Dates

John Cena wanted to do way more than 36 dates for his retirement tour.

When John Cena announced his retirement tour, he revealed that he’d make 36 appearances throughout 2025 before hanging up his boots. There’s only one more date left in the schedule as he’s gearing up to compete in his final match against either Gunther or LA Knight at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

However, speaking to The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, John Cena revealed the original plans for his retirement tour. He noted that he had a packed schedule with his wrestling and Hollywood commitments until after WrestleMania 41.

“I did too many jobs. I was in Budapest. All night on set in Budapest, fly to Indy, do Indy, fly back, land, drop my stuff off, and go film. Doing that till post-WrestleMania, back and forth to Morocco and Budapest and all these crazy places that weren’t east commutes.

“You think you can do it, ‘I’ll sleep on the plane, whatever,’ you don’t, it doesn’t happen. Then you get upside down, you’re super fatigued. I’ve threaded the needle just enough,” John Cena said.

John Cena Wanted To Do 220 Dates

Speaking further, John Cena revealed that he first wanted to do 220 dates for his retirement tour. However, WWE only needed him for 36.

“The plan, originally, was to do a full year. This just goes to show my ignorance in the business. I wanted to do 220 dates. Just take a year off of everything, hop on a bus, do a full WWE calendar, and totally say goodbye.

“Thank goodness that the business isn’t like that anymore! Because I would be, if you took a gingerbread man and broke him, I’d be done. They only needed me for 36,” John Cena said.
