If you tuned in later to tonight’s episode of WWE NXT, you missed a shocking title change that occurred due to a botched finish.
Tonight’s episode of WWE NXT kicked off with Blake Monroe defending the Women’s North American Championship against Thea Hail. This was a match that Monroe was clearly booked to retain. However, things didn’t go according to plan.
In the closing moments of the match, Thea Hail hit Blake Monroe with a springboard senton splash. When Hail went for the cover, Monroe didn’t kick out. The referee counted things as a shoot, and the three-count was executed before the champion could kick out.
After several moments of confusion between everyone in the ring and even the audio team playing Monroe’s theme, it was changed to Hail’s theme, and she was declared the next NXT Women’s North American Champion.
So what was the backstage reaction to this finish? We now have an important update.
Creative plans have immediately changed in WWE NXT
Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select) has confirmed that the finish was a botch and not intentional. When the botch took place, there was an immediate scramble backstage, and things within the show needed to be changed.
Creative plans were already in place that revolved around Hail not winning the championship tonight, and those needed to change. This shift is reportedly changing the creative of multiple members of the NXT roster in the process.
When it comes to whose plans have been altered, it seems pretty clear that all three competitors in the segment below were involved.
As of this writing, Sapp has not been informed who’s being blamed internally for the botched finish, as people were more concerned with making changes instead of placing blame.
Stay tuned to WrestleZone for more information as it becomes available.
