Tony Khan Reveals Major AEW Show Was Planned For Madison Square Garden And Why It Didn’t Happen

Tony Khan revealed why a major AEW event didn’t happen at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

During the taping of AEW Dynamite on 34th Street at the Hammerstein Ballroom, AEW President Tony Khan addressed the crowd and teased bringing a pay-per-view to New York.

When the fans chanted “MSG,” referring to Madison Square Garden, Tony Khan revealed that the inaugural episode of AEW Dynamite was originally supposed to take place at MSG back in 2019. He said the arena officials called and offered him the date, but took back the offer a couple of months later.

“That is an interesting idea. You know, for a long time, I’ll be honest, they didn’t want me there. Did you know that? Because the first episode of Dynamite was originally gonna be there. They offered me the date, and they said, ‘Would you like to do the first episode of Dynamite here?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I really would, it would be great.’

Tony Khan then claimed that MSG officials told him that giving him the venue “would really upset somebody.” It was clear Khan was referring to WWE, as he was nodding in agreement when the crowd chanted “Fu*k the fed.”

“And then they call me a couple of months later, and they said, ‘We don’t want you anymore, because it would really upset somebody.’ So I told them, ‘You really made me feel like Charlie Brown and Lucy (from the Peanuts) with the football here,'” Tony Khan said.

The first episode of AEW Dynamite then took place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on October 10, 2019.
