Sheamus has officially parted ways with WWE. However, a potential move to AEW reportedly isn’t being welcomed by everyone behind the scenes.
A new report suggests some talent within the company have concerns about another high-profile veteran joining an already crowded roster.
The reported frustration isn’t aimed at Sheamus himself. Instead, it centers on what his arrival could mean for wrestlers already waiting for television opportunities.
AEW talent reportedly concerned about another veteran joining the roster
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said he spoke with several people in AEW about the possibility of Sheamus signing with the promotion following his WWE departure.
“I did talk to a lot of people today in AEW who were like, ‘Are we really gonna take this guy?'”
Alvarez was quick to clarify that the reaction wasn’t personal.
“Let me make this abundantly clear — everybody I talked to, to a person, was like, ‘I really like Sheamus. I really like him.'”
According to Alvarez, the concern revolved around the fact that AEW already has a deep roster. Currently, many contracted wrestlers struggle to secure television time.
“The basic gist of it is: ‘There are so many people under contract, and there are so many people that already can’t even get on TV. And we’re gonna hire another 48-year-old?'”
He added that while some creative ideas — including reuniting Sheamus and Cesaro or placing them with the Death Riders — had been discussed, the broader feeling remained the same.
“It was just sort of like, ‘Here comes another one.’ Because The New Day’s probably coming in. Sheamus would be coming in. And that’s three more slots that people who have been there for a long time or who should be on the way up, they’re gonna be iced out again. People weren’t really thrilled about that idea.”
At this stage, no official sources have suggested that AEW would sign Sheamus. However, the reported backstage reaction highlights the balancing act Tony Khan faces as the company continues to weigh star power against opportunities for its existing roster.
