Cody Rhodes didn’t get to finish his story at WrestleMania 39, and a new report shines light on which WWE Superstar was behind it.
WWE WrestleMania 39 took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The main event featured Cody Rhodes challenging Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Championship. While many were certain that The American Nightmare would finish his story, The Tribal Chief came out on top.
Rhodes wouldn’t be able to finish his story until the following year at WrestleMania 40. While many believed this decision was a Vince McMahon call, a new report suggests there was a lot more to it than that.
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed it was none other than Roman Reigns who went to Vince McMahon to pitch him on the idea of keeping his title at WrestleMania.
“It was Roman Reigns’ call,” Dave Meltzer revealed. “I mean, Vince had to approve it. But Roman Reigns was the one who went to Vince with the idea and pitched the idea that it would be better, it would be more meaningful if he didn’t win the first time, we build to a bigger one the second time, and explained it.
“I think Heyman with Reigns did that. I think they were very persuasive. The argument’s very strong with the benefit of hindsight that they were right because the second year was much bigger than the first year. But Vince made the call, and Levesque was on board with the call, but Vince was the one who made the call.
Despite Roman Reigns’ pitch, Vince McMahon still had final say
“Vince was the one who had final say at that point. He had final say the whole time; he was the chairman of the board again or whatever. He was in charge of the company, and he remained having the final say even though Levesque was ‘in charge of creative.'” [H/T: F4WOnline]
Had WWE gone with putting the title on Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39, the company could have gone ahead with the match between The Rock and Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 without any issues.
It would be very interesting to see the current landscape of WWE today had WrestleMania 39 and 40 had gone differently.
