AEW Dynamite Results

We hear backstage comments from participants in tonight’s Dynamite matches. Mina Shirakawa, Willow Nightingale, Megan Bayne, Swerve Strickland, and Kenny Omega deliver their introductions as AEW Dynamite officially kicks off.

Renee Paquette asks Orange Cassidy if he has found a tag team partner after Roderick Strong walked out during their tag team match last week on AEW Dynamite. Cassidy says the good thing about The Conglomeration is that there are plenty of them, as Tomohiro Ishii walks into the frame.

Renee Paquette reveals that Jon Moxley and Mark Davis spent roughly 30 hours traveling back and forth from Australia. Moxley competed in a time-limit draw against Konosuke Takeshita for the AEW Continental Championship at AEW Grand Slam: Australia this past weekend. He now makes his way to the ring for the opening match against Mark Davis on AEW Dynamite.

Jon Moxley (c) vs. Mark Davis – AEW Continental Title Eliminator Match

  • The finish of the match saw Mark Davis tap out to Jon Moxley’s bulldog submission hold.

Winner: Jon Moxley

Grade: B-

Mox ducking a punch from Davis, whose hand appeared to smash into the steel post, was a nasty visual. The gutwrench into a piledriver that seemingly knocked Mox out, only for him to kick out at the last second, was another highlight.

Despite a strong showing, Davis falls short of earning a shot at the Continental Championship. As for Moxley, the night may have started with a victory, but his time-limit draw against Takeshita suggests he still has unfinished business with The Alpha.

Adam Page AEW Grand Slam promo

A pre-taped promo from “Hangman” Adam Page airs following his win over Andrade El Idolo at AEW Grand Slam. Page tells MJF that he will ruin any idea he has of a happy future and that the World Champion better pray to any god he believes in, because the Hangman is going to end Friedman at AEW Revolution.

We hear from FTR

AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR arrive alongside a wheelchair-bound Stokely Hathaway for a promo. Dax Harwood references The Young Bucks’ attack from last week’s AEW Dynamite. He says Matt and Nick Jackson were the best tag team in 2016, prompting the crowd to respond with loud “shut the f*ck up” chants.

Stokely grabs the mic and expresses his frustration with The Young Bucks. He says the Bucks shaking hands with The Rascalz screams nothing but fakeness in this business. “Everything’s good when the Bucks are good,” he adds. Stokely continues voicing his frustration, making things personal by bringing their mother and father into the feud.

As Stokely continues his rant, The Young Bucks jump FTR before turning their attention to him. Stokely tries to plead his case, but Matt and Nick acknowledge the superkick chants by delivering a pair of superkicks.

Nick Jackson then grabs the mic and announces an AEW World Tag Team Championship match against FTR at Revolution.

Brody King AEW Grand Slam promo

Brody King sarcastically congratulates MJF for weaseling his way to another successful title defense. That said, King wants to re-enter the title picture and issues a challenge for “the biggest and the baddest” on the February 25 episode of AEW Dynamite.

Willow Nightingale (c) vs. Megan Bayne vs. Marina Shafir vs. Mina Shirakawa – AEW TBS Title Match

  • The match concluded when Willow Nightingale reversed Mina Shirakawa’s figure-four attempt into a pinfall for the victory.

Winner and still TBS Champion: Willow Nightingale

Grade: C+

I don’t want to sound overly critical, but has Marina Shafir really improved? She was easily the weakest of the four women in this multi-woman title match. Megan Bayne nearly broke her neck with that avalanche German suplex. Mina Shirakawa was probably the best competitor of the four, but those forearm strikes toward the end of the match gave Willow much-needed time to regain momentum and score the winning pin.

AEW remembers Kerwin Silfies

The AEW broadcast team sends condolences to Kerwin Silfie’s family, friends, and all who are mourning his loss. Bryan Danielson fondly remembers Kerwin, noting how instrumental the late director was in teaching him TV production when Danielson joined WWE.

Hangman Page and MJF face-to-face

The challenger, Adam Page, is first to arrive in the ring. The commentary team notes that Page signed his contract for the World Title match against MJF at AEW Revolution back in Sydney. The champion, MJF, appears next, but he has yet to sign the contract.

MJF says he won’t be cutting a wrestling promo and openly admits to hating Page’s guts. He despises everything about the challenger. Maxwell drags the fans into the feud for believing that Page is anywhere near his level. He references Page’s standing with AEW fans as the company’s “main character” — when, according to MJF, it clearly is him.

But what MJF hates most about Adam Page is that Hangman holds two wins over him. Max claims something is off about Page — maybe because “your two boyfriends, Kenny and Swerve, are fighting” each other, or maybe because Page is in over his head after reaching the mountaintop twice.

Page questions MJF’s claims, crediting the fans for their support that helped him capture the AEW World Championship in the first place. Hangman says if there is a lucky shot in the ring tonight, it belongs to MJF, a man with a head thicker than Mark Davis, who forcefully inserted himself into the AEW World Title match.

Page adds that Max claims to hate him, but he hates MJF even more, not just because of the depravity of his words and actions. Despite all of that, whenever Page looks at MJF, it feels like he is staring at “someone more like me.”

Maxwell says they will not be doing anything other than a regular wrestling match at AEW Revolution. Page responds with a counteroffer. If MJF agrees to the stipulation of his choosing, then Page vows that if he loses at Revolution, he will never challenge for the World Title again for as long as he lives.

MJF says Page has himself a deal. However, Max will need a week to decide on the stipulation because, unlike Page, Friedman does not shoot first and ask questions later.

Hangman, however, already has his answer. It will be MJF vs. Hangman Page at AEW Revolution in a Texas Deathmatch.

The champion looks stunned as the challenger exits the ring to close the segment.

The Death Riders call out Don Callis Family

Jon Moxley is backstage with The Death Riders. PAC challenges the Don Callis Family to gather themselves for AEW Collision this Saturday, saying the Death Riders will not be hard to find.

Moxley closes the promo by challenging Konosuke Takeshita to face him in a no-time-limit match for the Continental Championship at AEW Revolution.

Orange Cassidy & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Gabe Kidd & Clark Connors

  • Tomohiro Ishii scored the victory for his team after planting Clark Connors with a brainbuster.

Winners: The Conglomeration

Grade: B-

Ishii was here to wrestle. Cassidy was here to provide a dose of entertainment.

The Stone Pitbull collapsed after the match, which genuinely made this writer worry about his health. Ishii has taken so much punishment over the years that it is a miracle he is still able to perform at the level he does in the ring.

The Don Callis Family responds

The Don Callis Family is shown backstage assaulting a group of jobbers. Josh Alexander has one man trapped in an ankle lock while talking trash, as Don Callis handles the mic.

Callis says they have heard what The Death Riders had to say and accept the challenge. He reveals that Konosuke Takeshita is not on AEW Dynamite because he is in Australia celebrating with Kyle Fletcher.

Kazuchika Okada then appears and calls himself Fletcher’s best friend. Okada says he could have been celebrating in Australia as well, but unlike Takeshita, he is a champion who shows up to work.

Andrade El Idolo steps into the frame and says his eyes are on the AEW World Championship. Callis closes the segment by teasing a potential CMLL World Heavyweight Championship match between Claudio Castagnoli and Andrade.

The Opps have a new leader

HOOK says Samoa Joe is out injured and has appointed him as the leader of The Opps. As his first order of business, HOOK has begun expanding The Opps’ ranks. He adds that Shibata is back in Japan handling international recruiting for the group, while HOOK oversees domestic recruiting.

The Brawling Birds vs. B3CCA & Viva Van

The finish of the match saw Alex Windsor and Jamie Hayter hit their tag team combo finisher on B3CCA for the win.

Winner: The Brawling Birds

Grade: Nil

WWE had The Brawling Brutes, and now AEW has The Brawling Birds. I couldn’t help but point that out. This was a showcase match for Windsor and Hayter, who, based on their presentation, could soon be in line to challenge for the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship.

We hear from Thunder Rosa and Kris Statlander

Statlander confirms she isn’t cleared to wrestle, but she isn’t looking to wrestle. She’s looking for a fight against Thekla if the AEW Women’s World Champion can step out of hiding.

Thunder Rosa says she didn’t like how Statlander dropped her title to Thekla, but she is a capable wrestler and teases a match against the Austrian star. Statlander is clearly not happy about Rosa’s announcement, but she still warns her to beware of the Triangle of Madness.

Kevin Knight vs. The Beast Mortos

  • The finish of the match saw Knight plant Mortos with the UFO Splash for the victory.

Winner: Kevin Knight

Grade: B+

Kevin Knight has a bright future ahead. Beast Mortis is one of the most promising stars to emerge on the AEW roster in recent memory. This was arguably the match of the night so far, and we still have the main event to come.

Another Will Ospreay return hype package on AEW Dynamite

AEW World Trios Title match this Saturday

The Demand is backstage. Ricochet says that now that he’s done with Jack Perry, he can focus on getting The Demand some more gold. Bishop Kaun wonders why every member of Jet Set Rodeo is busy in singles matches when they clearly should be defending the AEW World Trios Tag Team Championship, which is scheduled for this Saturday at AEW Collision.

Kenny Omega vs. Swerve Strickland

  • The finish of the match saw Swerve Strickland hit Kenny Omega with a House Call, followed by a Front Roll Ace Crusher for the win.

Winner: Swerve Strickland

After the match, Strickland snaps and launches an assault on a fallen Omega. He throws the referee out of the ring, and Prince Nana tries to reason with him. Strickland then wraps a chain around Omega and hangs him from the ring ropes. He sets up ringside steel steps near the broadcast table before sending Omega through the table with a Vertebreaker to close out the night.

Grade: A+

The overrun was every bit worth it. This AEW Dynamite match is a contender for match of the year, courtesy of two of the best of this generation, Kenny Omega and Swerve Strickland. There was no doubt in this writer’s mind that this would be a show-stealer. Referee Aubrey Edwards even took a V-Trigger to set up the closing stretch, which saw Omega catapulted into an exposed turnbuckle, leading to a brilliant false finish. The post-match assault suggests there is much more to come between these two competitors.

Overall Grade: B-

This was a weak episode, saved by the terrific main event between Kenny Omega and Swerve Strickland. Swerve works best as a tweener. As for Omega, he probably won’t be back until after AEW Revolution. This writer is also looking forward to Andrade El Idolo vs. Claudio Castagnoli for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship.

For those who missed it, Bryan Danielson once again acknowledged his WWE run during his tribute to Kerwin Silfie, proving that wrestling tribalism exists only on the internet. Thank God Megan Bayne avoided a nasty injury from that avalanche suplex. That’s pretty much it for tonight’s episode, and this writer will be back with AEW Dynamite coverage next week.
