CM Punk is looking to follow in the footsteps of several legends to create a great sports moment at WWE Elimination Chamber.
The 2026 WWE Elimination Chamber PLE will emanate from the United Center in CM Punk’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois, on February 28. Speaking on ESPN Get Up ahead of the event, the World Heavyweight Champion opened up about a WWE event coming to the venue in over three decades.
CM Punk revealed he was in attendance at SummerSlam 1994, the last WWE event to take place at the United Center in Chicago. He noted that he’s looking to follow in the footsteps of legends like Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Michael Jordan, and Jeremy Roenick to create a great sports moment in the building.
“It doesn’t matter what the building is. I think it’s a special event when CM Punk is in front of a Chicago crowd. But it’s a little more special this time because it’s the United Center. We haven’t run in the United Center in 30 years like you said. SummerSlam 1994 was, I believe, the first event, and I was there as a fan. I watched the Hart brothers, Bret and Owen, throw down in a cage.
“So I’m looking to follow in their footsteps, Jordan’s footsteps, Jeremy Roenick’s footsteps, the dynasty of the Chicago Blackhawks had there. I’ve seen a lot of great sports moments in that building. I’m just looking to add to it,” CM Punk said.
CM Punk also addressed his match against Finn Balor
CM Punk will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor at WWE Elimination Chamber this Saturday. Speaking further, he claimed that the match would be nothing short of excellent.
“I think it’s going to be a belter,” CM Punk said. I make no qualms about who’s good/who’s bad, and I think Finn’s great. Finn’s a great talent. He followed in a lot of the same footsteps I did. He trained a lot extensively in Japan. He made a career for himself before he got to WWE, so this is just like a next-level thing when he signed here, the same with me. Because our backgrounds are so similar, and I think we wrestled the same style, in front of that Chicago crowd, I think it’s gonna be nothing shorter than excellent.”
CM Punk’s wife and former WWE Divas Champion, AJ Lee, was also in the interview, and she hoped she could continue her lucky streak in Chicago when she steps inside the ring at Elimination Chamber. She will challenge Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship at the PLE.
“When I hear him say 1994, I think of being in grade school. But Chicago is very special to me. I won my first title there, I returned a few months ago there, so I hope I can keep that lucky streak going,” Lee said.
