Trick Williams faced criticism from Sami Zayn throughout their feud, culminating in Williams beating Zayn for the WWE United States title, and recently Williams opened up as to why he thinks fans sided with him more.
Speaking during an episode of WWE Countdown, Williams was asked why he believes fans sided with him so early, and wanted him to beat Zayn so much. According to Williams (via WrestleTalk), he thinks Zayn made his job easy by “hating” too much.
“Sami made my job easy. Hating is never a good look. Since day one Sami didn’t believe I belonged on SmackDown,” said Williams. “He even told me ‘you know that Whoop That thing you do? Don’t be surprised if they don’t know that up here. This is the big leagues, this isn’t NXT. I’ve been doing this for 20 years Trick, it takes a long time to have a resume like mine’. The problem with that is, if you sleep on your opponent, no matter who you think they are, you can get woken up, and that’s exactly what happened. He slept on Trick Williams. He doesn’t think that Trick Williams belongs.”
Williams went on to note that, he may not know wrestling history as well as someone like Sami, but he’s willing to put in the work, and that’s something Zayn never considered with him, which led to him being able to shock the champion at WrestleMania 42.
“Trick Williams doesn’t know the accolades of his favourite wrestler from 1942 when the business was still in the circus and they were still putting marks on people’s hands,” Williams said. “Trick Williams doesn’t know that answer, but Trick Williams knows how to grind, and that’s what Sami Zayn should have been paying attention to.
“I’m willing to put the work in, I just told you my testimony, I walked on, I wasn’t invited. Sami Zayn didn’t invite me either, and that’s why I’m here.”
