WWE Hall of Famer Kane became part of one of WWE’s strangest storylines in 2006 when the company turned the date May 19 into a major psychological trigger for the Big Red Monster. The bizarre angle was created to promote WWE Studios’ horror movie See No Evil, which starred Kane as the villain Jacob Goodnight.
Leading into the movie’s release, WWE repeatedly used the date May 19 on television to drive Kane into violent breakdowns. Wrestlers constantly mentioned the date around him, causing Kane to snap and attack anyone nearby.
WWE heavily promoted the film by connecting Kane’s character to the date May 19. Whenever someone mentioned the date, Kane would suddenly become enraged and lose control. One of the most memorable moments happened during Kane’s feud with Big Show.
WWE turned May 19 into one of Kane’s most infamous storyline triggers
After Kane became visibly disturbed backstage, Big Show repeatedly said May 19, which led Kane to brutally attack him. At WWE Backlash 2006, Kane’s match with Big Show suddenly stopped after a distorted voice repeatedly whispered May 19 throughout the arena while the building turned red.
The following night on RAW, Shawn Michaels also mocked Kane by wearing a shirt covered in “ay 19 logos during Kane’s match against Rob Conway. Michaels secretly shouted the phrase behind Kane’s back, tricking Kane into attacking Conway even more aggressively.
The storyline eventually revealed that May 19 represented the date Kane’s family died in the fire that shaped his backstory. However, WWE later complicated the angle even further by introducing an impostor Kane during a short-lived feud.
The entire storyline existed mainly to promote See No Evil, which was released on May 19, 2006. WWE constantly repeated the date across television to keep the movie in fans’ minds. The film itself focused on Kane’s horror character Jacob Goodnight, who violently attacked victims and gouged out their eyes.
Although the movie earned modest box office success, critics heavily criticized it upon release. Over time, the May 19 storyline became one of the most bizarre and unforgettable parts of Kane’s WWE career.
