WWE newcomer Nikki Blackheart officially stepped into the company this week with more than just a fresh start.
During a dark match before the May 19 taping of WWE NXT at the WWE Performance Center, the rising prospect debuted under a new ring name that carries deeply personal meaning.
Competing as “Nicole Martinez,” Blackheart defeated Skylar Raye in her first WWE outing.
While the match itself marked a major milestone, the story behind the name change quickly caught fans’ attention backstage and online.
Meaning behind Nikki Blackheart’s new WWE name revealed
Martinez is Blackheart’s real-life surname — Nicole Ripoll Martinez — and the name serves as a tribute to her late mother, Carmen, who adopted her when she was 12 years old. Carmen passed away on March 31, 2014.
Following her WWE tryout earlier this year, Blackheart shared an emotional social media post documenting a visit to her mother’s gravesite. She brought flowers, her independent wrestling championship belts, and her WWE tryout shirt while writing that her mother “raised a warrior.”
Fans online quickly connected the dots after her debut. X user @itsmekelsey_x wrote: “Martinez is her real last name if anyone is wondering. The significance also could be a tribute to her late mom who adopted her when she was 12.”
Before arriving in WWE, Blackheart built momentum on the independent scene under the guidance of veteran wrestler Gangrel. She captured championships in both Coastal Championship Wrestling and Metroplex Wrestling despite only beginning her wrestling career in 2024 — proof that her rise has been anything but a slow count.
Blackheart also participated in training sessions hosted by Bayley alongside top WWE names including Charlotte Flair and Natalya before officially signing with WWE.
Now competing as Martinez, the newest NXT prospect has already made her first statement — and it came with both heart and heavy impact.
