Rey Mysterio recently reflected on his infamous WCW “lawn dart” spot involving Kevin Nash. Interestingly, he admitted that it was his idea despite knowing the obvious risks.
The WWE Hall of Famer was a young wrestler at the time, focused on making every segment as memorable as possible and wasn’t thinking much about the risks.
Rey Mysterio never expected his WCW’s “Lawn Dart” moment to become wrestling history
During his recent appearance on Going Ringside, Mysterio was asked how the idea of Kevin Nash throwing him on the side of a truck like a dart came about. Mysterio replied,
“I actually offered to do that. When you’re young, you don’t think about repercussions, which is normal in our business. You just want to make things look good, and you’re willing to give whatever it takes to make that segment, 30 seconds or five seconds, stand out. At the time, we never, at least I never thought it would still be talked about 25 years later, you know, but it is, you know, 30 years later… To me, it felt normal at the time. Obviously, it wasn’t.”
The moment happened on the July 29, 1996 episode of WCW Monday Nitro during the early days of the New World Order (nWo) storyline. Back then, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall were portraying outsiders invading WCW.
During the segment, Nash grabbed Mysterio and threw him headfirst into the side of a production trailer backstage. The visual became one of the most memorable moments of the nWo era. Fans later nicknamed it the “lawn dart” spot because of the way Mysterio was launched into the trailer.
The stunt worked so well because WCW wanted the nWo to feel like a real threat rather than just another group of wrestling villains. Their attacks felt chaotic and dangerous, and the assault on Mysterio perfectly fit that image.
