Mercedes Moné Claims AEW Women’s Division Declined During Her Absence

Mercedes Moné isn’t wasting any time making big statements after returning to AEW. According to Moné, the AEW women’s division has heavily declined since her time away.

A week after returning as the Wild Card entrant in the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament, Moné finally addressed AEW fans on the June 10 episode of Dynamite. In a pre-recorded vignette, The CEO explained why she decided to return after nearly six months away from television.

Mercedes Moné says AEW Women’s division lost its power

Moné returned to AEW on June 3 and defeated Alex Windsor in the opening round of the Owen Hart Cup. It was her first AEW match since losing the TBS Championship to Willow Nightingale at New Year’s Smash and her first TV appearance since January.

Many fans expected Moné to talk about redemption after losing all the titles she once held. But she had a very different message.

During the vignette, Moné said she had spent the last six months watching the women’s division from afar. She revealed that what she saw didn’t impress her.

“I am a global icon, and the greatest to ever do it. Now, while everyone was celebrating my downfall-Unbelievable. Willow has done it. I was watching. For six months, I sat back and watched this division lose its power. I watched champions come and go and get killed; I watched opportunities get wasted. I watched people try to fill my shoes and fail,” Moné said.

Moné believes she is simply taking back what belongs to her. She also sent a warning to her next opponent, Hazuki, who awaits her in the semifinals.

“And now I’m back to remind everybody exactly who I am. Because there’s one thing you’re not going to take from me, the Owen Hart Cup. I didn’t come back for redemption. I came back for what’s mine. Mercedes advancing to the semifinal round. And, Hazuki, you’re next. And the CEO always collects,” Moné said.

As the reigning Owen Hart Cup winner, Moné sees the tournament as her territory and has no intention of giving it up.
