A new report suggests concerns are mounting behind the scenes regarding WWE SmackDown’s tag team division, despite the popularity of the current champions.
While the blue brand continues to feature established names in prominent spots, some within the company reportedly feel the division has lost momentum.
According to WRKD Wrestling, there is growing frustration over the lack of variety and competition surrounding the SmackDown Tag Team Championship picture.
The reported concerns come during a title reign that has largely revolved around the same rivals and recurring storylines.
Creative and talent reportedly concerned about SmackDown Tag Team scene
Damian Priest and R-Truth have held the WWE Tag Team Championships since March 20. Their reign began when they defeated The MFTs. The duo remains well-liked backstage, but the issue reportedly has little to do with the champions themselves.
WRKD Wrestling noted that “while both R-Truth and Damien Priest are beloved backstage, there is growing frustration over a lack of variety and competitiveness among the SmackDown tag title scene.”
Cory Hays of False Finish echoed the statement as he claimed the concerns have been building for quite some time.
“There has been frustration from creative and talent for a while regarding tag team wrestling on SmackDown,” Hays wrote.
The reported dissatisfaction appears to stem from the division’s direction rather than any individual performer. Priest and Truth have remained tied to The MFTs and Solo Sikoa’s group for much of their reign, with few fresh challengers emerging.
As wrestling fans often say, even the hottest tag team needs new dance partners. Some backstage reportedly feel the division has been running the same playbook for too long.
The situation has become even more noticeable following roster changes that saw former MFT members Tonga Loa and JC Mateo depart WWE. Meanwhile, Priest and Truth recently found themselves challenged by AAA World Tag Team Champions The War Raiders in a potential title unification scenario.
For now, the SmackDown tag division remains under the spotlight. Whether WWE introduces new teams or fresh rivalries could determine if these reported frustrations eventually fade away.
