A late injury has forced WWE to make a significant change to this week’s NXT card. A scheduled championship match is now set to feature a different challenger.
The setback comes just days after one rising star earned the biggest opportunity of her young WWE career.
On Monday, NXT General Manager Robert Stone confirmed that Layla Diggs has been pulled from Tuesday night’s NXT Women’s North American Championship match against Zaria after suffering an injury at a weekend live event.
Layla Diggs ruled out of NXT Women’s North American Title match
According to Stone, Diggs suffered an injury during Saturday’s NXT live event in Sebring, Florida. This left her unable to compete on the July 14 episode of NXT.
Delivering the announcement, Stone said (via X), “NXT General Manager Robert Stone here to deliver the unfortunate news that this past Saturday in Sebring, Florida, at an NXT live event, Layla Diggs got injured. Therefore, her championship opportunity against Zaria for the North American title isn’t able to happen this Tuesday.”
Despite the change, Stone assured fans the title bout will still go ahead.
“However, I promised the NXT Universe a North American Championship match, and a North American Championship match they will get. I’m currently working on a replacement as we speak.”
Diggs had earned the championship opportunity just last week by winning a four-way No. 1 contender’s match over Lizzy Rain, Thea Hail, and Izzi Dame. The title shot marked another step forward for the rising developmental talent, who has recently transitioned from regular appearances on EVOLVE to becoming a more familiar face on NXT television.
There is currently no word on the nature of Diggs’ injury or how long she could be sidelined.
For now, Zaria remains scheduled to defend the NXT Women’s North American Championship. Her challenger is set to be announced before Tuesday night’s show. While Diggs’ title hopes have been put on hold, the championship picture isn’t tapping out just yet, and another competitor will soon get the chance to step into the spotlight.
