Zaria walked into the July 14 episode of WWE NXT expecting one challenger, but left having survived three. After an injury forced WWE to scrap the originally scheduled title match, the NXT Women’s North American Champion faced a completely different test to keep her championship.
The last-minute change turned what was supposed to be a one-on-one showdown into a chaotic Fatal Four-Way, giving Zaria little time to prepare for a vastly different challenge.
Zaria overcomes surprise Fatal Four-Way to retain NXT Women’s North American Title
Originally, Zaria was set to defend the NXT Women’s North American Championship against Layla Diggs. Diggs earned the opportunity by winning a Fatal Four-Way No. 1 Contender’s Match the previous week.
However, NXT General Manager Robert Stone announced before the show that Diggs had suffered an injury during an NXT live event in Sebring, Florida. Rather than canceling the championship bout altogether, Stone reshuffled the deck and inserted Izzi Dame, Lizzy Rain, and reigning EVOLVE Women’s Champion Nikkita Lyons into a surprise Fatal Four-Way.
The challengers immediately tried to overwhelm the champion, with the action spilling inside and outside the ring. Every competitor enjoyed moments of momentum, as Dame, Rain, and Lyons each came close to stealing the title in a match where alliances disappeared as quickly as they formed.
Outside interference added another wrinkle late in the contest. Nattie Neidhart and Karmen Petrovic attempted to tip the scales in Lyons’ favor while the referee was distracted. However, Jaida Parker stormed to ringside and brawled with Neidhart, evening the odds before chaos could completely derail the match.
With the distractions finally behind her, Zaria regained control. She blasted Lyons with a spear before hoisting the EVOLVE Women’s Champion onto her shoulders and delivering an F-5 for the decisive pinfall.
The victory keeps Zaria’s reign intact despite a dramatic change in plans. Sometimes a champion has to roll with the punches — or in this case, the card changes. With Diggs still sidelined, it remains to be seen who will emerge as Zaria’s next challenger for the NXT Women’s North American Championship.
