Injured Champion Ruled Out Of AEW Redemption

CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion Mistico will miss AEW Redemption. AEW President Tony Khan confirmed the injured star is not medically cleared. His absence has also forced AEW to change major plans.

Tony Khan went live on X, formerly known as Twitter to share the update. He revealed Mistico suffered injuries during CMLL’s Arena Mexico show last Friday. Because of those injuries, he cannot compete on AEW TV or at Redemption.

Tony Khan confirms Mistico AEW Redemption absence

“One note coming out of tonight’s Dynamite. I’ve been hoping that he was gonna be available to participate in this week’s TV.” Khan revealed Mistico was originally planned for a major Redemption match. “One of the top international stars, and somebody who I felt was in line to be the number one contender for the International Title that’s Mistico.”

He then confirmed the former AEW plans had been scrapped. “Because of the injuries he sustained at Arena Mexico… Mistico was not cleared to wrestle for us this week, and Mistico is not cleared to wrestle at Redemption.”

Khan also shared hope that the Mexican star returns soon. “I’m hopeful, very optimistic, that Mistico will be back for Grand Slam: Mexico, but we can’t have Mistico for Redemption.” Instead of the original number one contender’s match involving Mistico.

AEW has announced a six-way ladder match. The winner will earn a future International Championship opportunity. Khan explained the change also creates opportunities for other wrestlers. “Given the circumstances… it’s a great opportunity to introduce new challengers and more competition at AEW Redemption.”

Jack Perry, The Beast Mortos, Komander, and Mike Bailey have been confirmed for the ladder match. The final two spots will be decided during AEW Collision qualifiers featuring Nick Wayne vs. AR Fox and Lio Rush vs. El Clon.

Meanwhile, AEW International Champion Kyle Fletcher is set to defend the AEW International Championship against Bandido at Redemption 2026.
