ROH Final Battle: End Of An Era Promises To Be An Emotional Finale

Just as the match between Lethal and Gresham will represent ROH’s past and present, so too will the tag title bout between The OGK and The Briscoes. Mark and Jay Briscoe, 11-time ROH World Tag Team Champions, are easily the most iconic team in the promotion’s illustrious history, and they’ll aim to go out with one final victory on Saturday. The reigning champions, The OGK (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett) will be standing in their way, and this duo has also left quite a mark in ROH. They rose to prominence as members of The Kingdom, and they won the gold in 2015, but Bennett left the promotion a few months later. The two close friends have had a storybook reunion over the last year, as Bennett returned and helped Taven in his feud with Vincent before they eventually regained the titles.

On Saturday, this tag team bout will be the perfect way to punctuate the remarkable ROH runs both teams have had. Win or lose, it will offer fans ROH’s brand of tag team wrestling at its finest. As a brief prediction, having Mark and Jay end this era as the champions feels quite fitting because the duo has remained loyal to the company through thick and thin, but seeing The OGK conclude their heartwarming reunion tour (in ROH) with a win over the legendary Briscoes would also be an emotional moment.

Whereas The Briscoes and The OGK are “made men” because they’ve firmly established their legacies, ROH Women’s World Champion Rok-C hasn’t fully gotten the opportunity to do so. “The Prodigy” emerged victorious in the tournament to crown a new champion, so she became the face of the resurgent ROH women’s division. But because she won the gold in September, the news surrounding ROH’s looming hiatus will deprive her of the chance to have a lengthy run with the gold. Instead, for all intents and purposes, her reign will end at the end of the year, but Final Battle will offer her, and the women’s division itself, one last chance to shine bright.

Maria Kanellis-Bennett and, behind the scenes, Bobby Cruise, have rebuilt the division from the ground up, and the aforementioned tournament was widely praised for the way it put women’s wrestling firmly in the spotlight. Rok-C, a 20-year-old prodigy who has a story fit for Hollywood, has been the ideal face for this new era for the division, and despite the disappointing circumstances surrounding the show, many fans are looking forward to seeing her defend the gold against Willow, another renowned competitor, on Saturday. Rok-C surely has a promising future in the wrestling world, and she’ll get to have another major breakout at the pay-per-view.
