Questions continue to surround the status of two members of AEW’s roster after a new report claimed one talent unsuccessfully tried to leave the company last year. The latest update comes as speculation grows around Sammy Guevara’s future following a recent change in his social media profile.
While neither situation has been officially addressed by AEW, a new report suggests there could soon be more clarity.
Report sheds light on Tay Melo and Sammy Guevara’s AEW status
According to Bryan Alvarez of Figure Four Weekly, Tay Melo requested her release from AEW in 2025. However, AEW president Tony Khan denied the request. Alvarez did not specify the timing of the request, although Melo spent much of the first half of 2025 away from AEW television before returning in June.
Before that, Melo had been absent from AEW programming since January 2023 after she and her husband, Sammy Guevara, welcomed their first child.
Alvarez’s report also addressed Guevara’s current status following his recent activity on X. On July 19, the former TNT Champion posted, “new bio,” after removing any mention of AEW from his profile, which now reads, “World Champion, Husband, Father & Professional Wrestler.”
Addressing the speculation, Alvarez said:
“Nobody in AEW seems to know what’s up with Sammy Guevara right now. Multiple sources told me that Tay Melo requested a release last year but it was denied. It’s expected we will know what’s up when everyone gets to TV tomorrow.”
Despite the online discussion, there has been no official indication that Guevara has requested his release or left AEW. He last competed for the promotion on the June 6 edition of Collision. Meanwhile, Melo’s most recent appearance came on the same show alongside Anna Jay in a losing effort against Divine Dominion for the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships.
AEW returns to television with Dynamite in Nashville before heading to AEW Redemption later this week. Until then, the report remains just that — a report. Nevertheless, fans may not have to wait much longer before the picture becomes less of a cliffhanger and more of a clean finish.
