5 Greatest Non-Traditional Matches In Survivor Series History

#5.) Shawn Michaels vs Sycho Sid – Survivor Series 1996

Shawn Michaels was around 7 months into his first-ever WWE championship reign in 1996 and he had a major challenge in the form of Sycho Sid. Here’s where things got interesting: Michaels was clearly groomed as the company golden boy and top babyface, but fans were getting tired of seeing Michaels.

In the 90s, it wasn’t as often an occurrence to see babyfaces getting booed heavily, but that night at Madison Square Garden, the crowd was not pro-Michaels. While the female and younger audience were cheering for the Heartbreak Kid, the larger, male audience was booing him quite heavily. If you watch the match without context, you’d think that Sycho Sid was the biggest babyface as he embraced the crowd’s love for him.

The match itself proved to be one of the finest of Sid’s career and Michaels, knowing the crowd’s reaction even seemed to play to it. On the night, Sid dethroned Michaels to become WWE Champion.
