With Tetsuya Naito losing out on a finals spot in 2016, he knew that he couldn’t make the same mistake. To advance to the finals, he needed to beat the man who won the Intercontinental Championship from him – Hiroshi Tanahashi. It was going to be anything but easy, but Naito was willing to give everything he had to displace the former ace of NJPW.
He would have to dig deeper than he ever had and went nearly half an hour, knowing that he needed to win. He would take advantage of the injured arm of Tanahashi and end up picking up the win, going to the finals to face Kenny Omega.
