AEW Dynamite Results
Lexy Nair is standing by with MJF and the Don Callis Family. MJF tells the cameraman to zoom in on the AEW World Championship, which he calls the only title that matters in this business. The camera then zooms in on his face as Max declares himself the best professional wrestler in the world.
He then turns his attention to TNT Champion Kevin Knight ahead of their 12-man tag team match later tonight on AEW Dynamite. MJF references the finalists in the Owen Hart Cup, Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay. He mocks Swerve for wanting power in AEW and tells him to “swerve off a bridge,” but says to keep Prince Nana out of the car because he’s Friedman’s “coffee plug.”
As for Ospreay, MJF says this isn’t 2024 and Ospreay isn’t the best wrestler in the world, he is. Max boasts about his victories over Hangman Adam Page and Kenny Omega, telling The Cleaner to keep Friedman’s “kosher pickle out of your mouth” since Friedman has beaten Omega twice.
MJF also takes aim at Mark Briscoe, mocking him and making a tasteless reference to the death of Mark’s brother, Jay Briscoe.
Don Callis then takes over and reveals MJF’s teammates for the Forbidden Door steel cage match, starting with TNT Champion Kevin Knight. Kyle Fletcher, Jake Doyle, and Kazuchika Okada are announced as members of the team as well. Callis then reveals the final member of the all-star squad: Andrade.
El Idolo is visibly shocked, as he wants no part of the arrangement. While MJF is thrilled by the announcement, the celebration is short-lived as he quickly finds himself in a confrontation with Andrade.
Callis calms the situation down and tells Andrade that he needs to get in line for an AEW World Title shot. For now, however, he must join forces with MJF as we move on to the first match of the night.
Kenny Omega vs. Tony Nese
- The finish of the match saw Kenny Omega hit Tony Nese with the One Winged Angel for the win.
Winner: Kenny Omega
Omega has the microphone, but he is interrupted by TMDK, led by his Forbidden Door opponent, Zack Sabre Jr.. As the faction makes its way to the ring, Omega retreats and joins The Young Bucks and Jack Perry on the entrance ramp.
Sabre nudges the microphone over to Omega with his boot, prompting The Cleaner to address the crowd. Omega introduces TMDK and jokes that nobody should ask what the acronym stands for because he doesn’t know, and neither do they, drawing laughter from the audience.
Omega then hypes up his upcoming Forbidden Door match against Sabre before signing off with his trademark catchphrase: “Goodbye and goodnight. Bang!”
Death Riders vs. Brodido
- The match ended when Bandido planted Daniel Garcia with the 21-Plex for the win.
Grade: B+
Daniel Garcia brought back his signature dance to counter the double Macarena, which made for an entertaining moment. The crowd also erupted when Bandido delivered a delayed vertical suplex to Marina Shafir.
Excalibur noted on commentary that the match marked the first time Daniel Garcia and Jon Moxley had lost as a tag team.
We hear from ProtOkada
Kyle Fletcher and Kazuchika Okada are standing by. Fletcher addresses the upcoming 12-man tag team match on AEW Dynamite. He then teases that a notable member of The Conglomeration will not be joining Mark’s squad as the camera pans down to Tomohiro Ishii, who is shown lying on the ground after being attacked by ProtOkada.
Tommaso Ciampa on Chris Jericho
Tommaso Ciampa reveals why he hates Chris Jericho. He says he doesn’t need to give 1,004 reasons when he can give just one. He hates every last bit of the “cool guy” act Jericho has been putting on and tells Y2J to stay at home if he wants to bring that act back. But if Jericho thinks he still has it, Ciampa is up for a fight.
He then tells Jericho the ball is in his court, and he better not drop it.
Tag Team Champions return on AEW Dynamite
Clark Connors and David Finlay are making their way to the ring when they are intercepted by Cope and Cage. A brawl breaks out in the arena, and the AEW World Tag Team Champions set up Connors for a double spear, but he is saved by David Finlay.
Cage grabs a microphone and says even he has standards, because he has never come across a team named after their mothers. He then brings up David’s legendary father, Fit Finlay, saying Fit should have done the world a favor and “let you run down the inside of his leg.”
Cope brings up The Dogs attempting to steal their gimmick and their own venture into professional wrestling. He says they thought they had everything figured out until they stood across the ring from teams like The New Age Outlaws and the APA.
The Rated R Superstar then challenges The Dogs to a match at Forbidden Door.
We hear from Thekla
Thekla cuts an incredible promo on her Forbidden Door opponent, Starlight Kid. I must admit, she’s grown on me because of her charisma.
Check out the full promo below.
Another match teased for Forbidden Door
Bandido is excited following Brodido’s reunion and their tag team win over the Death Riders earlier tonight on AEW Dynamite, and he expresses interest in going after the AEW Continental Championship.
Daniel Garcia appears alongside Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir. Garcia almost cracks everyone up with his bilingual skills during the exchange, briefly lightening the mood before the confrontation continues.
Moxley then takes over the promo and tells the ROH World Champion to “shoot your shot, compadre.”
HAZUKI vs. Mercedes Moné – Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament Semifinal
- The finish of the match saw Mercedes Moné make HAZUKI tap out to the Bank Statement for the win.
Winner: Mercedes Moné
Grade: A-
HAZUKI put up one hell of a fight, but Mercedes Moné walked away with the win. The match kept the crowd engaged from bell to bell.
It feels like every step in the Owen Hart Cup gets progressively tougher for Moné. Looking forward to the final, which I’m confident will be against Athena.
Will Ospreay & Swerve Strickland face-to-face
Tony Schiavone introduces Will Ospreay to the ring. Schiavone congratulates Ospreay on his wedding this past weekend and praises him for flying back for Dynamite despite the hectic schedule.
Ospreay thanks the fans for all the positive messages and support following his wedding. He jokes that the honeymoon period was short-lived due to his commitments, saying he barely had time to settle into married life before heading straight to Houston for Dynamite.
Swerve Strickland makes his way out alongside Prince Nana, who immediately mocks Schiavone’s attire and tells him to leave the ring. Strickland then turns his attention to Will Ospreay, claiming Ospreay has changed and referencing his recent alliance with the Death Riders.
Ospreay fires back, bringing up how the Death Riders took him out at Forbidden Door. He says he watched AEW All In Texas and saw Strickland come to Hangman Page’s aid against Moxley, despite Swerve remaining silent when Ospreay previously asked for his help. He then flips Swerve’s accusation back on him, questioning who has really changed.
Ospreay cuts a passionate promo, stating that his match against Strickland in the Owen finals is his “semi-final to the World Cup,” with the AEW World Championship being the ultimate prize.
Strickland responds with confidence, dropping an F-bomb, and warning Ospreay about his “fragile ass neck” as tensions escalate. Ospreay responds by dropping Swerve with a right hand.
Swerve retreats to the corner, where Nana hands him a chain as the situation nearly explodes. At that moment, the Death Riders appear on the stage, seemingly ready to back Ospreay.
Strickland gets the final word, saying Ospreay is wrong and that he has changed, before glancing at the Death Riders and backing out of the ring with Nana.
Chris Jericho responds to Tommaso Ciampa
Lexy Nair is standing by with Chris Jericho, who calls out Tommaso Ciampa for a face-to-face confrontation this Saturday on AEW Collision.
Backstage segment ft. Will Ospreay, Daniel Garcia & Jon Moxley
Daniel Garcia tries to stir the pot by referencing Swerve Strickland’s “fragile neck” comment aimed at Will Ospreay, which leads Ospreay to shove Garcia into the wall.
Jon Moxley then appears and asks Will Ospreay if he is in control. Ospreay admits he isn’t, and Moxley tells him he shouldn’t let words get to his head. Daniel Garcia dismisses it as “just words” and taps Ospreay on the shoulder, prompting a brief, amused reaction from Moxley.
We then move on to the next segment.
Mark Briscoe announces his All-Star squad
MJF makes his way to the ring for the upcoming 12-man tag team match on AEW Dynamite.
The Conglomeration appears on screen, where Mark Briscoe cuts a promo on MJF and references the Don Callis Family taking out Tomohiro Ishii earlier tonight.
Kyle O’Reilly then reveals that Tony Khan has issued a warning: if any member of either team causes a disqualification, that individual will be forced to sit out Forbidden Door.
Briscoe then announces the final two participants for his team: Konosuke Takeshita and Darby Allin.
12-Man Tag Team Match
- The finish of the match saw MJF trap Roderick Strong in a Fujiwara armbar, forcing him to tap out.
Winners: MJF, Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, Jake Doyle, Kazuchika Okada, and Andrade El Idolo
MJF and Andrade El Idolo corner Mark Briscoe in the ring while the rest of the Don Callis Family takes care of The Conglomeration outside.
Friedman and Andrade briefly get into a confrontation, but Don Callis manages to diffuse the situation.
Andrade then holds Briscoe in place for MJF, who connects with the Dynamite Diamond Ring shot.
The show goes off the air with the winners of tonight’s all-star tag team match standing tall inside the ring.
Grade: B-
I would’ve booked Andrade to get his team disqualified just to piss off MJF. That would’ve been really interesting to see — a five-on-six steel cage match at Forbidden Door. At the PPV, Andrade would’ve helped, reluctantly, MJF so that he gets a shot at the AEW World Championship.
Why? Because I do not want to see another match between Briscoe and Friedman, but that seems to be the direction post–Forbidden Door.
Overall Grade: B+
Tonight’s show felt like a departure from previous episodes, where the emphasis seems to be more on in-ring action and the number of matches than promos and segments. To be honest, I prefer tonight’s direction. Yes, the matches were longer, but at least there weren’t a dozen random matches thrown together on a two-hour show.
Moné vs. HAZUKI was clearly the match of the night. As for the drama, Ospreay and Strickland’s face-to-face was good but should’ve been kept shorter. Promo work has never been Ospreay’s strongest suit, but he puts his heart into everything he does, so kudos to him. I liked the goofy version of Garcia that resurfaced for a bit.
As for the main event, as I pointed out last week during my AEW Dynamite results coverage, the steel cage match could’ve taken place on Dynamite, and there was absolutely no need for tonight’s 12-man tag, but that’s Tony Khan’s booking for you. Overall, a solid show with new matches confirmed for Forbidden Door.
That’s it for tonight, and I’ll be back with more coverage next week.
