Christian Cage lived up to his reputation as AEW’s most ruthless talker on the June 17 episode of AEW Dynamite. He delivered a cutting verbal shot at a respected WWE veteran while setting the stage for a major title match at Forbidden Door.
The segment began with tensions already running high between the AEW World Tag Team Champions and their upcoming challengers, The Dogs. However, it wasn’t long before Christian grabbed a microphone. He reminded fans why few performers can weaponize words quite like “The Patriarch.”
Christian Cage targets Fit Finlay while challenging The Dogs
Earlier in the show, Christian Cage and Adam Copeland blindsided David Finlay and Clark Connors. This continues a rivalry that has been brewing since The Dogs interrupted the champions’ signature five-second pose and briefly made it their own.
After the confrontation spilled into the ring, Christian addressed the crowd. He teased that fans were likely expecting one of his trademark family-related insults before taking an unexpected detour.
Christian claimed he had never seen a tag team named after their own mothers, a remark clearly aimed at The Dogs. He then turned his attention to David Finlay’s famous wrestling lineage and brought WWE veteran Fit Finlay into the conversation.
The AEW star delivered his harshest line of the night by suggesting that if David Finlay was meant to be a gift to wrestling from his father, then “Fit Finlay should have done the world a favor and let him run down the inside of his leg.”
The insult drew a strong reaction and immediately reinforced Christian’s long-running persona as a master of uncomfortable punchlines. For wrestling fans, it was less a cheap shot and more a verbal spear aimed directly at Finlay’s family legacy.
Following Christian’s comments, Copeland shifted the focus back to business. He acknowledged The Dogs’ recent success before officially challenging them to a match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door on June 28.
With the challenge accepted, the AEW World Tag Team Championships will be on the line at Forbidden Door. Christian and Copeland will be hopeful of sending The Dogs home as “housebroken little pups” rather than champions.
