Darby Allin “Coffin Drops” in with Chris Jericho on the latest episode of Talk Is Jericho and Allin straight shoots with Le Champion about not “giving a shit” about what other people think. Allin talks about what makes a promotion like AEW so appealing to creative types like himself:
“Being as a creative person my whole life as I was, it’s just like, you’re in charge of your whole stuff. So it’s like sick to just do whatever you want,” says Allin. “So like the thing is, it’s like if I’m going to get over, I’m going to get over being myself instead getting something shitty handed to me and fail type thing so at least I’m kind of in charge of my own destiny in a way so that’s what’s awesome about it.”
Allin touches upon his time with EVOLVE, who at the time when he was there, already had a relationship budding with WWE and NXT. Allin could’ve gave a damn about that as he was more concerned with making a living.
“I guess they assumed everyone was like a super fanboy. Like, ‘Oh, you’re going to wrestle this guy so this will make you happy,’ you know? I’m not a fanboy, I’m not here to wrestle people and like brag online like, ‘I got to wrestle this NXT Superstar like this is so cool.’ I could give a shit. It’s not cool when you have all these hospital bills and you’re living in your car and stuff like that.”
Jericho followed up with the fact that Allin did live in his car for a time while living in Atlanta and his base means of survival was in heavy thanks to his membership at Anytime Fitness.
“I have an Anytime Fitness membership so I’d always cook my food at the Anytime Fitness with a George Foreman in the bathroom,” said Allin.
Darby does admit he misses that “under the gun” lifestyle that living in his car did present, because it forced you to hustle whether you liked it or not.
“I kind of miss that lifestyle in a weird way cause like now I have a house and it’s like, it’s cool because now I can build like skate ramps and have my privacy, but I miss the lifestyle of like, getting up at like eight in the morning and being, like there’s no time to be lazy. You kind of have to get like rushed out cause like the moment that hot sun hits your face and the humidity in Atlanta, you like have to go. You’re not going to like sit in your car and watch TV so I like constantly being pushed like, ‘go, go, go.’ All day.”
