Michelle McCool Was Honored To Have Victoria’s Retirement Match, Fought To Let Her Go Over

Michelle McCool tried to convince management to let Victoria beat her so she could go out on top in her final WWE singles match.

Former WWE Superstar Michelle McCool was the latest guest on GAW TV with Mickie James, Lisa Marie Varon, and So Cal Val to discuss a wide variety of subjects. During the discussion, Victoria brought up the fact that she had her WWE retirement match against McCool.

“I want to say thank you, Michelle, for my retirement match,” Varon said. “I think you saw me break down crying going, you know, the fans are not believing my character anymore. I don’t want to be here unless the fans believe it. I don’t want to hate the business. I need to get out. And I did.

“I went to go ask for my out and wait for my last match. And then you come behind me; you rub my shoulders. And I go tonight? And you’re like, yeah, and then Michelle was going, I tried to ask them to put me over and win the match. But they said no, but it was very emotional. I had a huge speech written, but you know me crying and talking don’t mix, but I want to say thank you for that.”

Michelle McCool said she was honored to have Victoria’s last WWE match and remembers going to bat with management to try and let Victoria win.

“Are you kidding me? I was very honored,” Michelle McCool said in response. “It’s funny, people, they really do think the worst of me. They think I used Mark [The Undertaker] for everything, and they think all this stuff. But I do clearly remember trying to fight for [letting Lisa win]. Like, what does it matter? Why not put her over?

“She has truly opened up this lane for all of us. It would be such an honor for me to have her last match. That’s amazing. But why not? What does it matter? I do remember fighting for that. And I just felt horrible that you had to go out that way. I remember whispering — everybody always says, what were you and Victoria talking about at the end of your match? I guess they can see us whispering something. I’m like, I just remember saying, ‘I love you, sis.’ And that was it.”

Varon confirmed that’s what McCool said and admitted that it broke her to the point that she was good emotional to give her goodbye speech.

Michelle McCool defeated Victoria on the January 13, 2009 episode of WWE SmackDown in what was (at the time) the latter’s retirement match. Victoria later made a cameo in the Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal at WrestleMania 25, and competed in the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble.

In between that time, Lisa Marie Varon competed for TNA Wrestling (as Tara) beginning in May 2009. Since she left TNA in 2013, Varon has competed sporadically on the independent scene, with her last official match coming against Melina for Masters Of The Ring Entertainment in 2019.
